School assembly

When I was just a school girl, I remembered standing in a line in the morning assembly. I used to hate it to boot, and would constantly pray so that the rain would fall…so that I don’t have to stand there like a dumb idiot, listening to the craps my school headmistress tries to drill into the students thick skull. Every week will be the same thing. It’ll always be about cleanliness and she’ll chide on how noisy the students were.

Then there was the singing of patriotic songs and the state songs after the national anthems. I never did understood why we had to sing so many songs in school, and I would sing halfheartedly each and every time, without failed and looked forward to the time where the singing session would end, cuz when the singing session finally ends, we’ll be dismissed and I can finally root my butt to the chair and I can start looking forward to recess.

As of late, I missed those patriotic songs. One of those songs is the one below… I am not sure if any of you remembered this, because it is very, very ancient. Dating back in 1992. I was in standard 2, then. This is the song… I don’t remember the song title, though. I would be eternally grateful if any of you could provide me with the title of this song. I only remembered the lyric, cuz I sang it every goddamn day during assembly back then.

Puji dan syukur pada Ilahi

Anugerahnya tiada terhingga

Kedamaian kemakmuran

Malaysiaku bahagia

Dengan tekad untuk berjaya

Berbakti pada nusa dan bangsa

Kami junjung cita-cita luhur

Perpaduan seluruh negeri

Seia sekata sehati sejiwa

Menghadapi cabaran

Kami sedia kami setia

Berkorban untuk negara

Bersemarak Malaysia tercinta

Kibarkan panji kebesarannya

Kami rela menjaga namamu

Sejahtera Malaysia

I really used to hate my school assemblies every morning of my school life. But now, I missed it. I missed the patriotic element the school tries to plant into our entire being.

I found myself singing this song the other day, when I was watching news on Malaysian politics. And I wonder… truly, truly wonder…

Puji dan syukur pada Ilahi ( How many of us are giving thanks to God for what we have instead of wanting more?)

Anugerahnya tiada terhingga (He gave us great gifts, and yet…)

Kedamaian kemakmuran (Are we still living in harmony, the way He intend us to?)

Malaysiaku bahagia ( Are we Malaysians truly happy with our country now?)

Dengan tekad untuk berjaya (Are we still motivated? Or we just do things so that we can pay the bills?)

Berbakti pada nusa dan bangsa ( Are we really serving our country? Where does our loyalty lies?)

Kami junjung cita-cita luhur ( Are all our ambitions pure? Or we have bad intentions in our heads?)

Perpaduan seluruh negeri ( Frankly speaking, are we truly united?)

Seia sekata sehati sejiwa ( We are not always in agreement, are we? Just look at us, we bickered over nonsensical matters!)

Menghadapi cabaran ( We don’t challenge ourself and get out of our comfort zones anymore. What happen to that true ‘Malaysia Boleh’ spirit?)

Kami sedia kami setia (Are we truly loyal? We back-stab one another at the first offering of money.)

Berkorban untuk negara (Would we sacrifice ourself for our beloved country when it needs us? Or we’ll migrate at the first sign of distress and instability?)

Bersemarak Malaysia tercinta ( Are we spirited and is Malaysia still respected in the eyes of the world?)

Kibarkan panji kebesarannya (Do we take the trouble to protect our country’s honour?)

Kami rela menjaga namamu (Sadly…we don’t say.. or rather, can’t really speak with pride about Malaysian’s achievements, because there’s so much scandal and nonsense going on these days.)

Sejahtera Malaysia ( This last verse…makes me feel sad… because we are no longer Patriotic…and we can’t really sing patriotic song and really mean it.)

Yes… remembering this song…makes me feel sad. What have we become? And what will become of Malaysia? Let us wake up and face the reality and face the fact that together we’ll stand tall, and divide we’ll fall. Let us honour and grace our country with unity, and prosperity once more, so that our children can live in harmony with one another, and love in their hearts.

Cleffairy: To fight for one’s belief is one thing. And to keep the peace and harmony is another things. Look into the history books, and remember how hard it is for our forefathers to form an independent country.Let’s not forget our roots.

No.. that’s another different song. That song you are referring to is this one. That one is called Demi Negara. I oso got sing this song…in STD 4, I think? LOL…

      Demi negara yang tercinta
      Dicurahkan bakti penuh setia
      Demi Raja yang disanjung tinggi
      Kesetiaan tak berbelah bagi

      Kepada pemimpin kepada rakyat
      Khidmat diberi penuh taat
      Sama bekerja sama berusaha
      Setia berkhidmat untuk semua

      Rela berkorban apa saja
      Amanah bangsa tetap dijaga
      Kami berikrar penuh setia
      Untuk agama bangsa dan negara

True…as long as they are politicking, our country will always be in doubts. 🙁

They think that by doing that, they can brainwash everybody…like those stupid courses that they send people too…and also the khidmat negara. A total waste of time and money…but not for the organisers though! Lots of dough changing hands under the table and big fat pockets!!!!

I’ve always loved this country called Malaysia, but i just hate the government of the day,(if you know what i mean ?)

we have slogans after slogans, 1Malaysia, where are we really going with this slogan, i really wonder. Can we really see beyond colors, creeds, genders, can we really see equality for all.

Can we really put down all our differences for the sake of our motherland, i really dont think so, if we do not make the Big Change, if the old guards are still holding the fort.

i am just wondering where we are all heading with all these…can we survive? or are we doomed? and we are talking about the future leaders of the country…..kinda bleak huh? hahahahahhahhaa

    • Cleffairy says:

The future is indeed bleak. Especially when the so called future leaders are doing nonsense instead of taking everything seriously. It is just too bad when the youngsters take things seriously, we will be told to act our age, and politics is for adults. Duh… I get that alot… but I am more than 21, and I am a voter, and therefore, I have the rights to be aware of what’s going on in my country.

    • Cleffairy says:

LOL… recess is the best cuz get to eat and play like a fool. I always hated sitting at the chair and listen to what the teacher say… everyday oso same… “bla bla bla”. LOL…

  5. mnhl says:

Oh yes…the assembly. I hate it too. Ours are held in the hall. Rain or shine still have to stand there (hot like hell) and some even fainted because the hall was pack with students. I don’t even remember any of the songs (except for Negaraku). State snd school songs are all forgotten already. And Cleffairy, you are so young!

    • Cleffairy says:

*faint* Yours in the hall? Mine was in the school compound. So, everyday pray it’ll rain, den we nonid to stand there like an idiot. Thank God that when I was in Form 4, I was head librarian, and I was in charge of the radio. Else, I would have to join the rest in assmbly as well. LMAo…

You dun remember any of the songs? I remembered, cuz I’ll always remember ‘torture’ . LOL… wun forget! Eh? What makes you say I’m young? I’m 25 d lerr!

  6. shakira says:

Those days when we are so innocent and we truly believe everything that we are taught. Those days are truly over.
I think we did a lot but nowadays, they do not.
    hugs

  7. Merryn says:

I dun even remember the lyrics.. the rukun negara oso I kenot remember.. i know the Gardenia roti I eat everyday has that rukun negara written on the packaging. I see it everyday yet I cant remember it.. sigh… so so bad..

    • Cleffairy says:

*kerploinked* You dun remember? OMG! *pengsan* Come… here’s the Rukun Negara… I give you the complete one. LOL…

Bahawasanya, negara kita Malaysia, mendukung cita-cita hendak :

      * KEPERCAYAAN KEPADA TUHAN
      * KESETIAAN KEPADA RAJA DAN NEGARA
      * KELUHURAN PERLEMBAGAAN
      * KEDAULATAN UNDANG-UNDANG
      * KESOPANAN DAN KESUSILAAN

There you go, lost Submerryn. LOL… the entire declaration of Rukun Negara. I remember this well, cuz when I was in form 5… I was the one who lead the ikrar! Ahahahahahah! They always give the honour to Head Librarian for Ikrar Rukunegara, and the Head Prefect gets to lead the Ikrar Sekolah and raise the flag. I dun get to raise the flag. *sulk* =.= So many things la!

now that you’ve mentioned it, i was actually singing s my arse out on stage for others to follow every monday morn. i used to hate it, but i think the school honed my ability to sing. i’m now singing regularly in my church’s worship team. so i guess i should be thankful…hehehehe. 🙂

      Kami ingin berdamai
      Di antarabangsa
      Dengan sorak sorai gembira
      Di seluruh negara

Wow fairy , you still remember the lyrics!
Your post reminded me of the question that recently poppoed up in my head….. Errrrr my state anthem has the word “Allah” in it. Does it mean the non-muslims are barred from singing it, improvize or simply juz skip that word when they come to it? hehe
    +Ant+

    • Cleffairy says:
