PUC and Smuzcity Roll Out JDX Presto Concept Store on 12.12

JDX Presto Concept Store, the largest cashless concept store in ASEAN, celebrates its official grand opening at Quill City Mall KL today. The partnership between PUC Berhad (“PUC”) and Smuzcity Berhad (“Smuzcity”) in launching their first Online-to-Offline (“O2O”) store signifies the joint effort of the two parties to create a cashless retail scenario in Malaysia.

Spanning a total 50,000 square feet in the strategically located Quill City Mall KL on Level 3 (Lot 63, 63B and 72), JDX Presto Concept Store hosts products from a host of brands covering categories such as Electrical Appliances, Gadgets, Health & Beauty, Home & Living, Fashion and Food & Beverage, with a total of up to 3,000 Stock Keeping Units (SKUs) from J.Zao, as well as other top selling products from China and the ASEAN region.

It is easy to begin shopping around the store. Shoppers just need to scan the QR code of their selected product with the Presto app and enjoy a hassle-free payment experience by checking out with the eWallet named PrestoPay in the app. Shoppers can opt for on-the-spot self-pickup or for convenient delivery to doorstep, supported by JD Logistics, the logistics affiliate of JD.com, China’s largest retailer.

Shoppers can take a break from their shopping sprees and enjoy some refreshments from the AI- and RFID-powered JDX Presto Unmanned Fridges, developed by JD Logistics’ logistics innovation lab, JDX, that are available at the in-store cafe. By scanning the displayed QR code with Presto app, shoppers are able to unlock the fridge and pick their favourite products off the shelves. Payment will be deducted from PrestoPay accordingly after the door is closed.

Have you heard about the term O2O? Yes? No? Well, I’m not talking about the well known C-drama ‘Love O2O’, but a shopping platform that applies O2O (online to offline) concept. Online to offline, commonly abbreviated to O2O, is a phrase that is used in digital marketing to describe systems enticing consumers within a digital environment to make purchases of goods or services from physical businesses.

It’s still something new in Malaysia and Quill City Mall Kuala Lumpur is the first in Malaysia to host a forum discussing the future of retail via ‘phygital’ platform.

Six retail industry players explored the future of retail impacted by the “phygital” era at an expert forum at the Quill City Convention Center. “It is about designing a shopping platform, a journey within a physical space, with consumer-centric tech infrastructure that facilitates the interactions between consumers and brands throughout the shopping experience.

“We need to challenge retailers that had or hadn’t been focused on pushing their products online to reimagine the essential role physical experience play in building strong and memorable relationships with their customers,” said Group CEO of Quill Group of Companies, Koong Wai Seng.

As more retail sales have shifted online with the rise of technology, the joy of being able to see, touch, and feel the product before making a purchase remains. The platform of the purchase itself is secondary to consumers. While the fun of shopping didn’t change, the way we shop certainly did. Preserving Traditional Art Through Music, Alena Murang Gives A Sneek Peak on Midang Midang MV

Growing up in Borneo, Alena Murang was surrounded by a rich natural environment, and cultures of many different indigenous cultures of the island. She is part Kelabit – one of the smallest ethnic groups on the island. Borneo is ingrained in the person that she is. She strives to tell the stories of the people and environment of Borneo, particularly of the Orang Ulu; Kenyah, Kelabit and Penan people of the Sarawak, through her visual art, music and some production and TV work; through research and documentation, language preservation and cultural activism.
Learning from her Kelabit and Kenyah elders, Alena Murang sings, dances and plays the sape’ (a traditional lute instrument). She is one of the first and few female sape’ players, and is growing in the global World Music Scene, travelling USA, Europe and Asia in 2018.
She started “ART4 Studio”, an organisation that aims to use art and music as a medium for positive impact, grounded in indigenous community values that are strong in the longhouse villages.

Alena Murang has been featured on Nat Geo People, Channel News Asia, Asian Nikkei Review, NPR Radio, BBC Radio 2, CBC News, and Discovery Channel and today, she launches her ‘Midang Midang’ music video at GSC Quill City Mall. Over a hundred attendees came to show support; comprising mainly of media and invited guests.

With her focus on bringing native songs and stories to global stages, together with “Project Room” production team, the event was made possible with the collaboration with GSC. Supporting partners include the Sarawak Tourism Board, Miri City Council, Marriott Resort Miri and Kanid Studio. The music video was co-produced with Project Room, a KL based production house. At the press conference, Alena shared her views on the importance of heritage songs

“Heritage songs are such an important way to keep our language, values, and stories alive. Our Kelabit songs almost always have elements of nature, and that’s why this time it was so important for us to film on the land in which the song came from Miri and Bario village.”

The music video showcased an ancestral Kelabit song in a contemporary way, demonstrating adaptations of Kelabit music, dance and land, and Sarawak fashion; with the likes of LANA, Maatin Shakir, Von Jolly Couture, Atelier Karl Jimmy,TeeCode, Wan Bynun, Neng Kho Razali, Raben Beads and Tanoti being donned by the star. Each film department was led by Orang Ulu youths, proving once again that heritage has a contemporary home.
“Growing up in Borneo, Alena Murang has shown a great sense of belonging by representing the Kelabit community, one of the 27 ethnic groups in Sarawak where she was raised. We are pleased to be with her in this special occasion,” said Sarawak Tourism Board, Chief Executive Officer, Sharzede Salleh.
“She is not just a performer, but also a good narrator that shares her amazing stories through music that articulates Sarawak’s unique culture and become one of the pillars in promoting Sarawak as a destination,” she added.
With an accompanying Behind the Scenes video, the event hopes to encourage viewers to think about the marginalisation and misrepresentation of indigenous peoples in Malaysian media, and the importance of cultural heritage; as well as give viewers an insight to better understand Sarawak and Dayak cultures.
