Colourful Traditional Cakes

I’m posting this up for the benefit of my friend. She’s a novelist friend who is from another part of the world. She asked me what Malaysians typically have for breakfast.

I told her we mostly have nasi lemak and roti canai for breakfasts (well, at least that’s what I usually have for breakfasts). And at times, we also indulge ourselves with traditional cakes. Some can be sweet while some others are savoury. Unfortunately for my friend, I’m the sort of person who knows how to eat more than anything.

Here are treats you won’t find at pastry schools, nor delicacies created at California Culinary schools.

Can any of you tell me the real the names of some of these traditional cakes?

Cucur badak, ondeh ondeh kacang and… uh…traditional sugar-coated donut…

Not sure what these are called, but they’re some sort of sweet apom.

Pulut udang… glutinous rice with prawn sambal wrapped in banana leaves.

Lepat pisang.

I don’t know what these are called, but I definitely know how to make these. I used to make these when I was younger. It’s made from a mixture of flour, water, salt and tumeric powder along with some meat and sliced chillies.

Kuih talam.

Apom. These are usually eaten with shaved coconuts.

Pancakes? Uh… I have no idea what these are called.

Not sure what this one is called.

Your traditional pancakes – kuih bingka
The brown things with grated coconut on top, I think kuih talam
Your kuih talam is serimuka…or kuih salad…or we call them tinggi salad.
The lipat pisang, banana inside? If pulut, we call them kelupis…

LOL! Actually I dun really know what all these are called, except for a few… those I makan regularly. Those I dun usually take, I dunno what’s the name. But I do know how most of them are made. My late grandma taught us granddaughters how to make those… just tak tau nama.

That pulut is called called pulut panggang berinti kah? I have no idea… last time my late grandma told me it’s pulut udang. >.<

Yes… the one wrapped in banana leaves is some sort of banana kuih. So I guess lepat pisang? But i know some duzzin have any banana inside, but made from flour and santan(not pulut)… that kuih very berlemak wan…dono what that one is called too.

Ooh I love ’em all but same like you, I only know how to eat but dunno their names (except for the few common ones like kuih lapis, apom etc.) I usually take them for tea/snack but not breakfast though…
