Mares Avanti Pure Fins Review

Plenty of people will advice you against buying your own diving gear when you just started diving. It’s skills that matters most, not the gears, they say. But I beg to differ. I have to strongly disagree with that statement as in my humble opinion, part of the things that could make or break your dives is the diving equipment. Rental equipments are not always new and well maintained, and therefore, buying your own equipments is definitely an investment if you plan to be a diver for a very long time. At the very least, buy your own diving mask, snorkel and fins. Don’t tell me you’re okay with wearing leaky masks that doesn’t fit snugly on your face? Or a mask that plenty of divers has spit on to defog? (Yes, people. Some divers do use their saliva to defog their masks) Or fins that rubs on your heels that it injured you badly after diving? Eww, no. No thanks, not for me. I’d at least use my own mask, snorkel and fins, thank you very much.

Picking your first pair of diving mask and fins is a serious business, and after some research and recommendations, I decided to go with this; the Mares Avanti Pure Fins. This pair of fins is pretty much lightweight, and it weights just about 0.6kg and is made of soft of thermoplastic rubber, making it one of the most travel friendly fins in the market.

The Mares Avanti Pure Fins is originally made to be worn barefoot, but the design is unique in the sense that it can also be worn with booties. The Mares Avanti Pure is an excellent pair fin that’s also budget friendly. I bought it from a dive shop in Kuala Lumpur for less than RM300, and pretty much a good deal, I must say.

The Mares Aventi Pure’s ergonomic heel pad minimises pressure on the Achilles’ heel while the bungee helps the strap to stay in the right position while finning.

Easy finning, works great with flutter or frogkick. I usually have problems with rental fins as I couldn’t muster effective kicks to glide through the water, but the channel on the Mares Avanti Pure fins helps to glide through the water effortlessly even with gentle kicking. The Mares Avanti Pure helps improve ankle flexibility and leg endurance while the ownward angled blade promotes the ease of surface swimming. (I bet it’s awesome to be used as snorkeling fins too)

The fins helps with underwater navigation and is pretty buoyant. I even tried the reverse kick with this Mares Avanti Pure and it’s definitely easier to use and less tiring on the feet in comparison to other rental fins that I’ve worn before.

So do I recommend the Mares Avanti Pure? Yes, I definitely recommend this fins, especially for new divers and for those who are diving in warm tropical water and those with small feet and for ladies who are prone to leg cramps and fatigue.

I’m not sure if this pair of fins provide strong thrusts that will be able to fight strong currents as I’ve only used it in calm underwater environment but I can definitely vouch it’s effectiveness in calm tropical water.

Treating Sunburns and Rashes with Sabun Ajaib

Scuba diving is a very honest and non- glamorous sport. Once you’re underwater, your looks does not matter. Even if you’ve put on some makeup prior to diving, it’ll simply be washed away. What matters most about diving is not you, or how you look like, but your surroundings; the beauty of the marine life and it’s wondrous ecosystem.

If I were to describe how diving is like to non divers out there; it’s like stepping into another world that’s both beautiful and mysterious at the same time. To me, diving is life. Everything else is just surface interval. But I’m a terribly vain person. As much as I love diving, this recreational sport have a drawback. It gives me frazzled hair, painful sunburns and nasty rashes. Now, why didn’t I use sunblocks to prevent such things from happening? Well, I don’t use sunscreens/sunblocks lotions because most of the sunblocks commonly sold are not reef friendly and they are harmful towards corals and the marine lives.

Irritating skin due to sunburns and rashes as well as frazzle hair is really annoying. But luckily for me, there’s this; Sabun Ajaib.

Sabun Ajaib is a handmade soap made from 100% natural ingredients- mainly bamboo vinegar and is great for relieving skin irritation due to itchiness. It’s highly recommended for those with ekzema or skin proriasis.

I was skeptical at first when my friend introduced me to this soap, but I’ve been using this Sabun Ajaib religiously and it works wonders on me. It actually have cooling effect and soothes sunburns instantly upon usage. My skin actually felt much more moisturizer after frequent usage. And the best part? It works wonders on my hair too where it helps to reduce frazzles and actually soften my hair like expensive shampoo would. Needless to say, I’m never going for a diving trip without taking Sabun Ajaib along with me. It’s definitely a saviour. Yups, I highly recommend this, especially for divers.

If you have sensitive skin, ekzema, or suffer from skin irritations, you might want to try this soap. It’s been helpful for me and my family. Who knows it might work wonder on you too. 😀

How to Choose The Right Agency for Your Open Water Diver Certification

Since I started diving last year, I’ve always hear people asking me me this when they are considering to take their Open Water diving license:

Which agency should I go with? PADI or SDI or SSI?

Now, that’s a trick question. Honestly, there’s no right or wrong in choosing the agency that you want to start to learn diving with.

These agencies teaches the same thing and produces the same thing, which is: divers. These certifying agencies are the same, be it PADI, SDI, SSI, NAUI, etc. They’re all regulated under the same roof, which is the World Recreational Scuba Training Council (WRSTC).

The license granted by these agencies are inter-crossable, so it doesn’t matter from which agency you started your Open Water with, you still can use the license to advance and continue your education with others, and dive at any part of the world that you want at the depth that you’re qualified for. None of it is superior than the others, so which agency you start diving with doesn’t actually matters.

What makes the difference is how they market the diving/certification packages and the instructors as well as the community they’re in.

Listen up! You don’t choose agencies. You choose the instructors that you’re comfortable with.

You need someone who can patiently guide you, and someone who you you can trust your life with when you’re underwater.

So yea, research your future instructors first. Go with recommendations, stalk their profile and talk to them before you sign up for anything. There’s no point diving if you’re gonna have to tolerate impatience or unable to enjoy the experience underwater. You also need to feel safe underwater, so go with someone you can trust your life with.

I’ll be penning down more about diving from now on and perhaps some diving gear reviews in the future as a newbie diver, so keep your eyes peeled for it, ya?

Jom, Experience Penang!

Would you believe me if I told you that I’m a Penang-lang? Not sure what’s that? Well, it’s a Malaysian local slang for Penangite; a term used to refer to the locals who were born or stays in Penang, Malaysia. Yes, people, I’m a Penang-lang. Well, almost. I was born and raised in Penang but now I’m staying in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with my family.

Penang, dubbed as the Pearl of The Orient is a state located in the Northern of Malaysia. Once an important Straits of Malacca trading hub, the city is known for its British colonial buildings, Chinese shophouses and mosques. Beyond the old town, George Town is a modern city with skyscrapers and shopping malls. Verdant Penang Hill, with hiking and a funicular railway, overlooks it all.

The Penang State Tourism’s efforts to spur its tourism industry continues in Kuala Lumpur, as it launches JOM! Experience Penang campaign at the Pullman Hotel, KL City Centre today. Penang State EXCO for Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage (PETACH) YB Yeoh Soon Hin, who also heads Penang State Tourism, presides over the launching ceremony together with Mr Ooi Chok Yan, CEO of Penang Global Tourism.

The JOM! Experience Penang campaign is focused on attracting domestic travellers to Penang with value-for-money promotions, namely Best Hotel Deals, Best Attraction Deals, Best Tour Packages and Thank You Frontliners, all of which are available on the campaign’s website – penangtraveldeals.com. These promotions offer visitors different experiences and substantial savings on accommodations, attractions, and tours. Additionally, the campaign also honours essential workers in Malaysia working at the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis with free passes and attractive deals on hotels, attractions, and weddings through its Thank You Frontliners campaign.

YB Yeoh Soon Hin, Penang State EXCO for Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage (PETACH) said, “After being confined to our homes for months, there’s never a better time to start travelling again and explore the diversity of a nearby state known globally for its UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town, quirky street art, street food, 130-million-year-old virgin rainforest, and diverse natural landscapes of hills and beaches.

The state also boasts attractions with world unsurpassed titles, branded collectively as 7 World Wonders of Penang, as well as a host of other hidden holiday gems located across Penang Island and Seberang Perai.

“Those seeking a world-class holiday need not look further than our own backyard. Touted by CNN as one of the “Best Places to Visit for the Ultimate Asia Experience”, Penang also boasts new attractions with world unsurpassed titles such as World’s Steepest Tunnel Track; World’s First Tower Curved Skywalk; World’s Highest Ropes Course Challenge; World’s First Free Standing Vertical Drop Slide; World’s Highest Altitude Stressed Ribbon Bridge; Tropical World’s First Butterfly & Insect Sanctuary and World’s Longest Water Slide with a Guinness World Record!

“With so many attractive discounts and deals under this campaign, I urge Malaysians to skip the jet lag and travel locally. Come discover a nearby world-renowned tourist destination this Merdeka holiday — Penang is just a flight or a road trip away.”

Earlier this morning, two new JOM! Experience Penang adverts featuring the campaign’s promotions and 7 World Wonders of Penang, were unveiled in front of Wisma Genting along Jalan Sultan Ismail. These adverts join the ongoing EPY 2020 Outdoor Advertising Campaign on Covered Walkways along Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Raja Challan, located in front of Wisma Genting and Wisma Cosway respectively. The Penang State Tourism is the first tourism board to advertise on these spaces promoting such a campaign in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2020.

Footcare Consultation with Dr.Edmund Lee at JennOrtho, Midvalley Megamall.

So, I’ve been having some backache and my feet is kinda prone to cramps. Now, I’ll be taking my diving exam in Perhentian next month and that’s a no no. I cannot be having leg cramps at 18m underwater. Absolutely no! It would be a catastrophe if I have to abort my dive midway! Realising how important feets are for divers, I consulted with my Dive Buddy and he suggested that I do something about the issue as unlike swimming where hands played an important role in moving you underwater, finning is what actually help you propel and glide effectively underwater while diving. And so, I decided to do something about it.

My Dive Master suspects that I may have been wearing the wrong kind of shoes and therefore I’m prone to cramps. He suggested some feet or chiro checkup. Visiting the chiro is a bit freaky for me since Covid19 happens, so I decided to visit the newly opened JennOrtho at Midvalley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur instead to have my feet checked.

Jenn Ortho is a leading center that provides Custom 3D Medical Orthotic shoes specially designed individually. At JennOrtho, it’s not just about selling health shoes but also help you to analyze your feet so that you will be able to pick the right footwear for you.

Free foot alignment check at JennOrtho

I was lucky. They were offering free consultation by Dato Dr.Edmund Lee himself when I visited the outlet.

Anyway, like I said, feet scanning and consultation is given for FREE here and therefore, I decided to go on ahead with the free consultation. Here’s the expert at JennOrtho scanning my feet to help me determine my feet type and the type of shoes I should be buying for myself to ensure maximum comfort all day long.

My scan result. I was informed that my feet are apparently a little bit on the flat and low arch side and extra support is needed.

During the consultation session with the experts at JennOrtho, I was informed of the common problems with our feet.

I didn’t really pay much attention then as I was too excited with all the shoes displayed over there and I was a bit distracted but here’s sharing with you some of the common problems that we usually faced that are related to our feet.

1. Flat feet (our feet are flat and has no proper arch for support)
2. Nunion (excess bulding at the side of your big toe)
3. Callous (thick dead skin cells under the base of your feet)
4. High arch
5. Intoe-ing (pigeon legs- walking with both legs pointing inwards)
6. Toe walking (tip toe when you walk)
7. Bowlegs (bending outward of the legs from the knees down)

And so here’s some of shoes that were suggested to me.

These shoes are especially designed to support flat feets.

Dr Edmund Lee, the owner and the in-house doctor at Jenn Ortho shared tips with me on choosing the right footwear during my visit and here’s sharing his tips with all of you here:

1. Buy shoes in the evening because our feet expands the most at that time

2. Suitable shoes are shoes that can be inserted two fingers behind the shoes and the front of the shoe. This is to allow for a space for our feet growth.

3. Try both side of the shoes and walk with them to make sure they are comfortable.

As of writing, they are having the 50% off on selected shoes and I thought it’s high time to pick some new shoes.

Wide range of health shoes to suit your needs.

Some of the collection for children. They’re not only smart in design but keeps your kids’ feet comfy all day long. Look at these, pretty neat, right?

JennOrtho is also selling supplements for bone health.

Anyway, if you are looking for shoes, or any casual shoes for both yourselves and your children to wear that’s not only fashionable but also promotes overall comfort and well being, you might want to head over to JennOrtho at Midvalley Megamall and check things out.

Remember, feet are the basis for healthy body formation. If you choose the wrong footwear that does not support your feet, it will affect your well being and you’ll have tendency for knee pain, unhealthy spine, waist and many more. Therefore, picking a pair of shoes that provides proper support is very important.

Ps: (Don’t worry about hygiene and stuff. JennOrtho completely adhere to the RMCO SOP and the machine is sanitized with every use.) You’re also required to check in for contact tracing purposes and all of their staffs wears masks during service as well, so yeah, go for it, guys!
