Dusit International Continues Philippines Expansion with Grand Opening of DusitD2 Davao Hotel

Dusit International, one of Thailand’s leading hotel and property development companies, and Torre Lorenzo Development Corporation (TLDC), one of the fastest-growing real estate development companies in the Philippines, celebrated the inauguration of dusitD2 Davao hotel on 6 September 2019 with a special ceremony held in the elegant Dusit Thani Grand Ballroom.

Hosted by Mr Lim Boon Kwee, COO, Dusit International, and Mr Tomas P. Lorenzo, CEO, TLDC, the special event was attended by local dignitaries including Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, and Davao City Vice Mayor Sebastian Duterte, alongside representatives from leading local businesses and the tourism and hospitality industry.

Demonstrating Dusit International’s and TLDC’s commitment to having a positive local impact, during the event TLDC made a donation to the Armed Forces of the Philippines Educational Benefit System Office (AFPEBSO), which assists the dependents of wounded soldiers.

Soft opened in March this year, the upscale, full-service dusitD2 Davao hotel is TLDC’s latest premium development in the Davao region. The property comprises 120 well-appointed guest rooms and suites in a prime location off JP Laurel, Lanang, close to the city’s shopping malls, business district, and IT Park. Davao International Airport can be reached in 15 minutes by car.

Designed by renowned Philippine architect Manny Samson, and inspired by ‘the vibrancy of life,’ the hotel has been carefully crafted to reflect Dusit’s unique brand of Thai-inspired gracious hospitality while also embracing the cultural richness of the destination.

Besides the spacious Dusit Thani Grand Ballroom and several adjoining function rooms, hotel facilities include a courtyard swimming pool with children’s pool and play zone, the Madayaw Café all-day dining restaurant, the sophisticated Siam Lounge, the signature Namm Spa, and the fully equipped DFiT Fitness Centre. Dusit’s signature Benjarong Thai Restaurant will open soon.

dusitD2 Davao hotel is just one of three new projects Dusit International has signed to manage for TDLC in Davao. Also set to hold their grand openings soon are Dusit Thani Residence Davao, and The Beach Club at Lubi Plantation Island, Managed by Dusit.

Soft opened this month, Dusit Thani Residence Davao is located next to dusitD2 Davao hotel and comprises 174 well-appointed residences and suites for short and extended stays. Designed to redefine luxury accommodation in the region, the deluxe property’s spacious rooms feature high-quality furnishings, well-equipped kitchenettes, and the latest in-room technology.

Soft-opened in December 2018, meanwhile, The Beach Club at Lubi Plantation Island, Managed by Dusit, is an exclusive island retreat just off the coast of the Davao Gulf (only 10 minutes by boat from Pindasan Port). Alongside 18 beautiful Seafront Villas overlooking a private beach, this special destination offers a large swimming pool, a children’s play area, a spacious events hall, and the Tarictic Grill & Snack Bar. A watersports and diving centre is set to open soon.

“We are humbled and honoured to have the opportunity to bring our Thai-inspired gracious hospitality to Davao and to work with Torre Lorenzo Development Corporation to help promote the region to the world at large,” said Mr Lim Boon Kwee, when addressing the audience at the opening event. “dusitD2 Davao, Dusit Thani Residence Davao, and The Beach Club at Lubi Plantation Island, Managed by Dusit are perfectly positioned to meet the growing demand for premium developments in the region, and we look forward to making them all a resounding success.”

Dusit International’s property portfolio now comprises 271 properties (nine owned and 262 managed) operating under six brands across 13 countries. The company has more than 50-Dusit branded hotels in the pipeline and expects to open at least 10-12 hotels per year in key destinations from 2020 onwards.

Enjoy All-Year Round Summer in Borneo with Hilton Kota Kinabalu

Only two-and-a-half hours away by flight from Peninsula Malaysia, Kota Kinabalu is a summer’s destination full of adventure and wonder. Only 15 minutes away from the airport, Hilton Kota Kinabalu is the ideal starting point if you have your heart set on an experience – whether it be diving, wildlife-watching, or taking on the majestic Mount Kinabalu.

image

For first-timers visiting the friendly state, the dedicated team at Hilton KK’s (the city is affectionately known by its initials) is ever ready to help with your travel bookings for an unforgettable summer getaway.

image

Here are some of the places to visit in Kota Kinabalu:

Go on a day excursion of island-hopping, snorkelling, and swimming at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park

Named after Malaysia’s first prime minister, the marine park consists of five islands: Manukan Island, Sapi Island, Gaya Island, Mamutik Island, and Sulug Island. Gaya Island, the largest of the five, is home to natural beauty and azure waters; Manukan Island, the most developed and popular of the islands; while Mamutik Island, the smallest of them all, is also the most sedate. For the adventurous, options such as snorkelling, scuba diving (PADI courses are offered), and jungle trekking are also available on the islands.

Hop on a sunset cruise down Weston River and catch a glimpse of fireflies

From a scenic drive with views of paddy fields, kampung houses, and little towns; to spotting Proboscis monkeys (known for their large noses and round bellies) in the distance; followed by a beautiful sunset at the mangrove forest; and capped off with catching fireflies on a pitch dark night, this is a not-to-be-missed opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts to get up close and personal with nature.

Learn about the many indigenous tribes of Borneo at Mari Mari Cultural Village

With at least 30 ethnic groups in Sabah alone – each with its own unique culture, tradition, and dialect – The Mari Mari Cultural Village doubles as a museum preserving as well as educating visitors on Borneo’s ethnic culture. Mari Mari (meaning “come come”, a local lingo indicating a warm welcome) showcases the various traditional homes of the island’s indigenous communities (Bajau, Lundayeh, Murut, Rungus and Dusun) as well as their different ways of living, accompanied by nibbles and bites from each indigenous tribe. The tour ends with dance performances by the locals, which culminates to an interactive one where visitors are invited to join in, before heading back into town.

Check out Gaya Street Sunday Market for a peek into the local culture

If your trip happens to be on a weekend, wake up early and stroll along Gaya Street, the city’s main road, for the Sunday Market. For one day a week, stalls sell all sorts of interesting knick-knacks such as handcrafted wares, clothes, antiques, and snacks. Bargaining is a must, as is the purchase of Kuih Cincin (literally translates to ‘ring cakes’, a sweet and crispy local biscuit, shaped like honeycomb cells).

Conveniently close to the airport and a mere 10 mins walk from the ever-popular Gaya Street Sunday Market, Hilton Kota Kinabalu’s prime location is easily one of its most attractive features. All of its guest rooms and suites are fitted with smart lighting and motion sensors, plus creature comforts such as a 48-inch TV, walk-in rain shower, and a comfortable chaise lounge, with views of the city, harbour, or the famous Mount Kinabalu from its rooms and suites.

The five-star hotel offers a motley of dining options from a Malaysian all-day dining restaurant with live cooking stations, to an alfresco poolside bar and grill spot (an easy-to-love spot for sunset-watching), a café for snacks and grab-and-go bites, and Club Bar, a stylish speakeasy bar with live jazz performances.

Room prices start from MYR530.00nett at Hilton Kota Kinabalu. For further enquiries or reservations, please call 088 356 000 or email [email protected]

Software Update Brings Powerful Galaxy Note10 Features to the Galaxy S10

image

The Galaxy Note10 and Note10+ are packed with powerful tools designed to help users unleash their creativity and be more productive. Now, with an update set for release beginning in Malaysian markets from September 26,1 Samsung Electronics is introducing many of those same bar-raising innovations – including features like AR Doodle, a built-in video editor and Link to Windows integration – to the Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+.2

Once Galaxy S10 users download the update, they’ll notice that their smartphone’s pro-grade camera has become even more powerful. The update expands the camera’s Night Mode to include support for the front-facing camera as well – offering users more freedom to snap vivid shots after dark. It also introduces enhanced Super steady video stabilization, as well as support for dynamic Galaxy Note10 functions like AR Doodle and Live focus video recording. The former lets users enhance their videos with fun, augmented-reality drawings and messages, while the latter lets them apply bokeh effects (including blur, big circle, color point and glitch) to videos recorded with the front or rear camera.

Once Galaxy S10 users capture a memorable clip, the camera’s new Gallery app-accessible video editor offers all the tools they’ll need to turn it into a shareworthy video. This versatile feature makes it easy to edit videos like a pro, and features simple tools for trimming clips, stitching them together, adjusting playback speed and more. You can even use the function to add subtitles and background music to clips to make your content more unique.

The update also incorporates support for Samsung DeX for PC. Once users download the app from SamsungDeX.com, they’ll be able to launch Samsung DeX on their PC or Mac simply by connecting their Galaxy S10 to their computer via USB cable. Link to Windows support has also been added, which means that Galaxy S10 users will be able to wirelessly connect their phone to their Windows 10 PC and easily view its contents, send and receive messages, and sync recent photos directly from their computer.

Apps that Galaxy S10 users rely on every day, including Samsung Pass and Messages, have also been made more versatile and convenient. Now, Samsung Pass’s setup has been simplified, making it easier for Galaxy S10 users to utilize their device’s advanced biometric technologies to log in to apps and websites quickly and securely. In the Messages app, new icons for adding photos and videos have been positioned to the left of the text window to offer users easy access to the files they need.

As Jiyoung Mun, an engineer at Samsung Electronics’ Mobile R&D Office, explained, the Galaxy S10’s update reflects Samsung’s commitment to offering more users access to exceptional innovations. “At Samsung Electronics, we’re constantly exploring ways to offer Galaxy device users the best possible smartphone experience, and this software update is an extension of that commitment,” said Mun.

1 Update release date may vary by country and carrier.
2 Each global market will receive the same features through the update with the exception of the U.S., where features may vary by carrier.

Samsung Continues to Win Big at the Putra Brand Awards 2019, Thanks to its Ongoing Ethos for Innovation

image

2019 has been a meaningful year for Samsung, marking the 50th anniversary of its founding. Adding to that, the past 10 years have been even more significant – as Samsung paved the way for the Malaysian society and its consumers to do and achieve what was previously thought unimaginable, thanks to the power of innovative technologies and meaningful ideas. This is Samsung’s timeless commitment to its consumers.

Once again, this commitment to its consumers was recognised by the industry itself at the 2019 Putra Brand Awards, as Samsung Malaysia Electronics bagged two highly-coveted Platinum Awards under the “Communication Devices” and “Cameras, IT and Office & Business Equipment” categories. In addition to that, Samsung took home a Gold award for its contribution to the “Personal, Households & Outdoor Appliances” segment as well.

“The past 50 years have been amazing for Samsung, and we are truly proud and grateful for everything that we have accomplished. Currently, our next bold vision is to take it to the next level – to truly make the idea of Connected Living a reality. This means producing half a billion devices a year that are both connected and intelligent. With that, a whole new world of connectivity and convenience will be ushered in, allowing us to focus on the most important things. We started off as a humble trading business 50 years ago, but have now evolved into an undisputed global leader in IT and consumer electronics that we are today. Essentially, this is exactly what we want to inspire in our consumers – to do what you can’t,” said Yoonsoo Kim, President of Samsung Malaysia Electronics.

“Being recognised with three of the highest Putra Brand Awards means a lot to us at Samsung, as it means that we have been doing the right things for our consumers. Over the years, our deep understanding of users’ needs has manifested into ground-breaking innovations; and as such, we continue to rewrite history with unparalleled innovations such as the Infinity-O Display, the Samsung One UI, and consumer electronics products’ that are seamlessly integrated via SmartThings. We are ecstatic about the win yet humbled at the same time, as we have set a high bar for ourselves that we must adhere to,” he added.

“Over the decades, we have built an unwavering trust through pioneering technology. 50 great years have passed, and as Samsung propels towards the next 50 years, there are two guiding principles that will stand the test of time – innovation and trust. These two key principles are what we will hold onto more firmly than ever as we continue our pursuit of more inventive innovations that will make our vision of Connected Living a reality,” President Kim concluded.

Now in its 10th year, the distinguished Putra Brand Awards is an annual premier brand awards event which recognises brand-building as an integral business investment, measured by consumer preference.
It was first launched in 2010 by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia (4As) in association with the Malaysia’s Most Valuable Brands (MMVB).

In determining its winners, the Putra Brand Awards utilises a robust consumer research method in which 6,000 consumers themselves vote for their favourite brands in specified categories. With the Malaysian consumers themselves acting as the judges of this distinguished event, Samsung was named the most-preferred smartphone and IT & offices equipment brand; solidifying its position as the leader in the arena of personal and work technology.

Home Remedy for Haze Poisoning

I haven’t been feeling so well since the second week of September 2019; when the haze blew all the way from the burning forests in Indonesia all the way to Malaysia. For readers who are not from Southeast Asia, haze is pretty common here. Indonesia has been burning their forests for decades in the name of agriculture, killing thousands of animals and humans yearly.

The world is generally against terrorism and genocide. But every single giant organizations in the world turn blind eyes to this. Even world leaders kept their mouth shut. Why? If this is not terrorism, I don’t know what is. It’s a shame, really. But I’m not here to talk about the politics of it. I’m here to share with you my personal experience dealing with the haze this year; which is particularly bad.

When the haze started to hit Malaysian shore, I thought I’d survive it without falling seriously sick, as I did the previous years. I took all the necessary precautions, after all. Mask on, staying indoors, limiting outdoor activities, you know, the standard Ministry of Health’s template drill in dealing with haze.

Dealing with the effect of haze this year is particularly different. Instead of the usual breathlessness when the air pollution index shoots up, I felt as if I was poisoned instead. I didn’t notice it at first as the symptoms are really subtle but it got really bad as days gone by. From mere dizziness, I started to vomit acid and white bubbles like nobody’s business. I couldn’t eat or drink and whatever I tried to eat or drink will just be vomited out. Even my worst case of food poisoning in the past seems a breeze in comparison to this. Apart from constantly vomiting white bubbles, I felt dizzy and lost my balance to the point I couldn’t even walk without support. I practically walked like a drunkard for days and nearly collapse at that too.

I sought medical attention of course, but my doctor couldn’t figure out what’s wrong with me and passed it off as gastric and told me to just sleep it off. The doc gave me charcoal pills which had no effects whatsoever in easing my discomforts.

To say that I wasn’t impressed with my ‘diagnosis’ was an understatement. And so I chatted around with friends and apparently they too had similar symptoms since the haze started to thickens. We’re no expert but we can only deduced that while our doctors diagnosed us as having gastric problem, it might not be the case. There’s more to just “gastric”. How can it be? A group of people who are perfectly healthy, took care of diet and whatnot developed gastric out of the blue? We must have inhaled too much air pollutants or accidentally consumed water that has been contaminated with dangerous particles from the haze.

Here’s sharing with you what I did to nurse myself back to health:

1. Drink young coconut juice and eat the flesh after every meal. The coconut juice works like a charm. It gives instant rehydration. Even plain water and oral rehydration salt does not work as well coconut juice.

2. Take only plain and soft food like porridge during meal times.

3. Eat more vegetables and fruits in between meals as snacks. I go for sweet and juicy kind of fruits; watermelon, honeydew melons, hami melons, kiwi, apples, guava, papayas and grapes.

4. Include vegetable soup in every meals.

5. Take yogurt drinks/probiotics. It help in easing the tummy discomfort. In my case, it works way better than the charcoal pills given by doctors.

6. Exclude tea and coffee. They’re diuretic and is no good if you need to keep your body well hydrated.

7. Avoid meat or poultry. They take longer to digest and can easily cause discomfort.

8. Avoid newly caught seafood during haze priod. There are possibilities that they are contaminated with dangerous particles from the haze too.

8. Take shower regularly to maintain optimal body temperature and to avoid getting a fever.

9. Carry mist bottle with me all the time and spray the mist on the face whenever I feel hot or dizzy.

You know, there’s nothing much we can do but detox to stop our body from getting sicker and sicker during haze period . All we can do is detox and nourish our bodies with nutritious food to aid recovery. I’m all for seeking medical attention when you’re sick. But if it doesn’t work, you might want to try what I did to help your body to recuperate.
