The Kid From The Big Apple

I’m not sure where you usually bring your kids to during the school holidays but whenever school is out, I’d bring my son traveling. To me, nothing could help us to bond more than spending time together on our family trips. Our family trips are usually backpacker style and the destinations are always those away from the city and closer to nature.

Of course, there are times that the school break is too short to plan any trips and my husband and I opt to bring our son to the cinema for a movie treat or a full scale movie marathon instead. Cinema, you say, why cinema? Some would say that cinema is fairly an odd place to bond with your kids.

Well, truth be told. Cinema is fast becoming my favourite hangout place mainly because all three of us would actually snuggle together and enjoy what’s being shown instead of me and my husband glancing down on our respective smart phones, trying to catch up with work. You see, apart from places of worship, cinema is probably the only fun place that does not allow gadget usage during showtimes. Everyone will have to put away whatever gadgets that they have whenever they are in cinema, and this is absolutely good for us.

Yes. We are guilty of being overly attached to our gadgets, that but trust me, we do make effort to disconnect to reconnect and spend some quality time as a family.

Problems? Yes. Our son is still in primary school and movies have to be carefully selected in order to suit his age. My husband and I will usually choose children friendly movies or at the very most, movies rated PG-13 to watch together with our son during our movie outings so that he won’t only have fun, but benefit educationally from the movies.

Most of the movies that we watched are from fantasy and fiction genre, but here’s recommending a very good movie that you can watch with your family for the upcoming school holiday; The Kid From The Big Apple.

Anyway, no spoilers for the movie from me over here. There’s no joy in spoiling anyone’s fun in giving spoilers but I vouch for this movie and highly recommends it if you want to have a movie outing with your family that will not embarrass you with profanities or inappropriate scene.

The Kid From The Big Apple tells the story of a little girl from New York by the name of Sarah Lin whose mother is a single mother. She’s all dandy in New York but one day, her mother had a little work crisis in China and had to send Sarah to her estranged grandfather who is living in Malaysia until the problems resolves. Naturally, being well settled in New York, Sarah rebelled against the decision and all hell breaks loose when she was sent to her grandfather.

There’s language barrier between the granddaughter-grandfather, culture shock, generation gap and many more.
The movie is not only fun but is packed with moral values that kids these days could possibly learn. A forewarning, though. This movie is both laughter inducing and at the same time, an effective tearjerker.

 photo 3687_777643355698810_7404046039870111964_n_zpswrwiaxhj.jpg

There’s plenty of heartwarming and touching scene that will most probably tickle your funny bones but at the same time, make you sob your head off.

 photo 946107_779964488800030_9174957121048822228_n1_zpsey6p2o8m.jpg

This is definitely a child friendly movie, I must say. I can guarantee that by the time you leave the cinema, you and your children will be taught a lil bit about appreciating life’s little pleasure, honoring friendship, family ties, bridging the generation gap, filial piety and most importantly, lifelong learning.

Here’s a little bonus for your conscience should you really watch this movie; part of the profit from this movie will be channeled to Mah Sing Foundation for the needy. Isn’t that great? You can have a clean good fun time with your family and at the same time, give back to the society.

The Kid From The Big Apple will be screened in cinemas nationwide from 10th March 2016. Early bookings is recommended to avoid disappointments.

Rasa Utara, Berjaya Times Square

Being a Penangite who lives in Kuala Lumpur, finding a place that serves authentic northern delicacies can be quite tedious. Plenty claimed to serve original recipes from Kedah, Penang and Perlis but more often than not, it’s not the case and merely northern food in branding and name only.

Now, I’m constantly on the hunt for good northern Malaysian food and recently discovered that the restaurant Rasa Utara is offering pretty much authentic and good ones.Reaching the restaurant is fairly easy and straightforward. The restaurant is located conveniently in Times Square and is easily accessible by public transport like buses and monorail.

 photo 20160222_195907_zpsulud6ts5.jpg

Here’s what my family and I managed to try in Rasa Utara not long ago; Set Nasi Rasa Utara, Nasi Jagung, Nasi Rasa Utara, Ikan Menari, Udang Sambal Petai, Daging Masak Hitam, Kailan Ikan Masin, Udang Asam Goreng, Ayam Goreng Cili Lagenda, Laksa Pulau Pinang, Mee Rebus and ABC (Ais Batu Campur)

 photo 20160222_195753_zpsoabb06m2.jpg

Checked out their menu and discovered that they are offering set meals at a reasonable price. Picked out one and ordered their chef’s recommended; Set Nasi Utara, consisting of Nasi Utara, ayam masak merah, fish crackers and sup bergedil on the side. Definitely a wholesome meal for someone who wants a bit of everything in one sitting.

 photo 20160222_195325_zps14f30jwu.jpg

Nasi Utara can be ordered individually or in a set. It is fragrantly infused with a myriad of herbs and spices.

 photo 20160222_195340_zpstw1yn4gy.jpg

Nasi Jagung. Basically this is rice cooked with corns. Might be weird to some but to me, it is positively addictive and complement most of the dishes offered in Rasa Utara very well.

 photo 20160222_195539_zpsbkdif71o.jpg

Ikan Menari is one of the Chef’s recommended in Rasa Utara. The fish is fried and presented in a way that makes it looks like it is dancing in the air. The fish was adeptly fried and was served with irresitably spicy sambal dipping on the side. Good on it’s own and to be taken with the variety of piping hot rice offered on the menu.

 photo 20160222_195610_zpsd70sv0ax.jpg

Udang Asam Goreng was something I wouldn’t mind having again soon. Unlike the prawn dishes that I’m familar with, this prawn dish is sourish instead of bland or spicy. Highly appetizing and great to be had on it’s own or with rice.

 photo 20160222_195456_zpswuecc9zx.jpg

Udang Sambal Petai was nicely done. Perfectly spicy and aromatic with the pungeant stink beans.

 photo 20160222_195357_zpsjoxl0ggi.jpg

Ayam Goreng Cili Lagenda is not for the faint hearted. It’s really spicy and if you’re to eat this, make sure you have wet wipe or a napkin as it’s pretty much tear and sweat inducing.

 photo 20160222_195346_zpsxfqofwyw.jpg

Daging Masak Hitam was one of my favourite that night. The cubed meat was cooked to perfection and was perfectly flavoured with spices. Goes well with rice, or if you please, with crusty bread as well. Should you order this to take away, you’ll be pleased to discover that the dish tastes better the next day too.

 photo 20160222_195426_zpsfnufoqjj.jpg

Mee Rebus is sensational, according to my son. The gravy was thick and was bursting with flavour and was topped generously with condiments.

 photo 20160222_194023_zpsowgdxlgh.jpg

I’m always picky when it comes to laksa. It takes a really good and experienced cook to produce a really good laksa dish. Been hunting for a really good bowl and most of them are terribly disappointing. They either have diluted laksa soup, or the soup is infested with tiny fish bones, which is definitely a turn off. This Laksa Pulau Pinang from Rasa Utara however is up to par to my northern girl standard. The laksa soup is not only thick and have no traces of fine fish bones in it but it’s sweetly flavoured with bunga kantan as well. The laksa is topped with a slice of boiled fish, boiled eggs, shredded cucumber and slice pineapple and shrimp paste sauce on the side. Definitely a star and a must order if you’re to patronize the restaurant.

 photo 20160222_195521_zpsm3n4lnex.jpg

Satay was all right. The skewered meat was sufficiently flavoured.

 photo 20160222_204123_zpsnexywxkg.jpg

For dessert, we decided to go for something really cooling to wash down all the hot and spicy dishes away. We had ABC; Ais Batu Campur. An instant pleasure. The portion is huge and generous with assorted nutty toppings, definitely something we needed after all the spicy dishes that we had.

Overall, they serve authentic utara dishes with pretty reasonable price and highly recommended to those northerners who would like to have a taste of home. There’s plenty of signature dishes I haven’t managed to try in Rasa Utara and definitely would be making a revisit back there for more northern-Malay delicacies.

Learn to Overcome Fear with Aaron Crow: Fearless in Genting

I’m quite a coward. I have fears. A lot of em. And most of my fears are ridiculous and would manifest themselves in the form of nightmares. Some of my fears involves the fear of falling down from a tall building or getting my head chopped off by some goons while I’m walking on the road. All these are of course, just fears. They are not real and it is something can easily be overcome provided you know how.

My fears have been plaguing me for quite some time, but lucky me, I have been recently introduced to a dashing and powerful man; Aaron Crow.

 photo IMG_0096_zpsjgftja8b.jpg

Aaron Crow is a silent mentalist, and a magician in his own rights, well-known for his appearance on the smash hit TV show “Britain’s Got Talent” which wowed both the audience and judges and even the infamous and dreaded Simon Cowell commented, “That’s a great act!”. During his live show performance, he even trended worldwide on Twitter.

 photo IMG_0261_zpsth7wmsg1.jpg

Aaron Crow is now in Resorts World Genting, Malaysia to help you overcome your fear in his: Aaron Crow’s “Fearless!”. With the tagline ‘Cheating Death Nightly’, his performance is definitely a must watch when you’re up in Resorts World Genting as he will without a doubt transport you into a parallel universe of magic, suspense, risky stunts and mystery which will leave you at the edge of your seats and wanting for more.

Hence, here’s a little on his show. His show, “Fearless!” is a show with the positive theme of facing and overcoming our fears. Aaron Crow – a warrior with a mission – said “We can all overcome our fears, we can all become stronger. The time is now; A new year, a new you, a fearless you”.

Aaron’s most popular acts are “Supravision” which is likely to be the most spectacular blindfold act in the world, “Bowman” which is an unseen combination of bravery and love that might bring a tear to the eye and “The Final Bullet” in which Aaron Crow attempts to catch a signed bullet shot at 300 Bar from a paintball machine gun. His routines are highly original and authentic and are performed with utter silence from him and to some spine-tingling and eerie music.

My family and I had the opportunity to witness the preview of his show during the Chap Goh Mei weekend and I have to say that it is nothing short of amazing. Unlike most performance, we were encouraged to face our fears and rely on our senses to overcome it.

I can’t tell you about the show in elaboration as we only had a short preview and were only highlighted to some of his acts, but I can assure you that psychologically speaking, the show is nothing short of exceptional definitely a must watch.

Here’s a little sneak peak;

Kicking off Chinese New Year 2016 with Hacken Lee at Resort World Genting

 photo received_bWVzc2FnZV9ibG9iX2F0dGFjaG1lbnQ6MTAyMDg0MzEzMDMyMzc5MTU_zpsdwg8raor.jpeg

Are you a fan of Hacken Lee?  Hacken Lee is a well known vateran singer hailed from Hong Kong. Not sure if you are a fan, but for those who were born in the 70s and 80s would surely remember his glorious time, especially in the 90s. Popular for his upbeat and soothing songs, Hacken Lee has never failed to surprise his fans with his soulful and energetic performance. Hacken, crowned as the singer with Zero Defect Vocal is not only a popular Hong Kong singer but has since been an actor, television host and sportscaster. He rose to fame in 1985 in a singing competition where he won with his rendition of Alam Tam’s hit ‘Love in the Fog’

 photo received_10208431300837855_zpsjnrxkgj2.jpeg

The sensational singer was in Malaysia to perform for his concert during the recent Chinese New Years eve in Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands. The concert was exclusive for his fans who were ushering the year of the Fire Monkey in Resorts World Genting.

Divided into two sections, earlier with the slow and romantic ballads and second half of the show a more energetic and upbeat sonhs so to prepare for the countdown, Hacken ushered in the concert with his first song by Alan Tam  ‘Love in the Fog’  as the opening theme for evening.

The songs performed during the concert were either his own songs or songs made popular by famous artistes.

During the concert, Hacken serenaded fans with his own rendition of everlasting cantopop songs made popular by artistes namely  ‘Wind’ by the late Leslie Cheung, a mandarin hit ‘Cannot Forget You’ by Jacky Cheung.

Adding spark to his concert were two young and talented special guest artistes namely Huqin artist, Chan Pik-sum and rapper artist RX Wong Ho Pong.

 photo received_10208431303517922_zpsswm1dxm6.jpeg

Pik-sum showcased her talents on the Chinese bowed string instrument known as Erhu and performed together with Hacken in his self made popular hit Fly Flower.  Subsequently, Pik-sum used a higher pitch erhu called Gaohu. Together with Hacken both artistes continued to serenade the crowd with Hackens popular hit back in the 80s, Halfmoon Serenade, the Cantonese version of the Japanese hit that was composed and sung by Naoko back in 1987.

 photo received_bWVzc2FnZV9ibG9iX2F0dGFjaG1lbnQ6MTAyMDg0MzEzMDI5MTc5MDc_zpsaild9wro.jpeg

Later in the concert, Hacken appeared in full white attire with a white mask in significant to his participation in ‘King of Mask Singer which he won during episode one of the China Jiang Su TV competition in July 2015.  He sang the winning songs Mount Fuji made popular by Eason Chan and a Mandarin hit Cannot Forget You made popular by Hong Kong Superstar Jacky Cheung.

The concert then continued with the upbeat section where Hacken wowed his crowd with fast songs such as Victory, Myth of Summer and many other others.  Also present in the second half of the concert is young Hong Kong rapper artist- RX Wong Ho Pong who awed the audience with his rendition of hip hop pieces that include rapping, impersonating of sounds such as cars, planes and many more.

During his performance, RX also called for a battle of sounds with Hackens band drummer Mel at the concert where RX impersonates sound and Mel is required to follow. It got the crowd excited during the battle. Later, Hacken came into the scene and suggested a cooperation between the drummer and rapper by creating good music for the audience. Together, all the artistes performed World Cup Football related songs such as Victory & Fans Journey that got the audience dancing to beat.

As the clock draws nearer to 12am, Hacken called for a countdown starting from 20 seconds to 12am together with the crowd. The minute the clock strikes 12 midnight, Hacken wished the crowd Gong Hei Fatt Choy and straightaway went down the stage to distribute the Chinese New Year goodies to fans while singing two Chinese New Year songs namely Choy Sen Dou (Prosperity God has arrived) & Ying Chun Fa (Welcome Spring).

 photo received_bWVzc2FnZV9ibG9iX2F0dGFjaG1lbnQ6MTAyMDg0MzEzMDI3OTc5MDQ_zpsqhny3e7w.jpeg

Besides giving the audience a fantastic performance, he gave an awesome countdown to the Lunar New Year before coming down from the stage and walked around the Arena of Stars to give the adoring fans some tokens for good luck before going back up the stage again to sing for them. The excitement continued with fans then started to distribute Angpow to Hacken on the stage. It was indeed a happy occasion for Hacken receiving so many Angpows from the audience. He instead assured the audience he will keep the Angpows for his two sons Ryan and Rex education.

The concert ended with Hacken serenading his fans with more songs and wrapped up the show with his ever popular hit Red Sun (Hong Yat).

Hacken Lee’s recent concert in Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands was nothing short of fabulous and it’s definitely a wonderful start to the year Fire Monkey 2016.

He surprised the crowd by delivering many of his greatest hit songs of which some were pieces sang by Jackie Cheung, Alan Tam, Leslie Cheung and other popular singers. Pik-Sum showcased her skills on the Chinese bowed string instrument known as Erhu in a romantic music called Fly Flower.  She also used a higher pitched erhu called Gao-hu in another popular Cantonese folk song called Half Moon Serenade. While Pik-Sum serenaded the audience with heavenly music, next up came RX rapper artist, Wong Ho Pong who awed the audience with his rendition of hip hop pieces that included rhythmic and rhyming speech plus MCing/rapping.

The atmosphere at the concert was exuberant.  Before the clock striked 12.00 midnight, Hacken Lee made a countdown together with the guests and welcomed the lunar New Year with a bang. He walked down from the stage to shake hands with his fans before giving away fortune bags and goodies.
