Pests are not pets

Pests. What do you think of them? Oh, you know, disgusting creatures like insects, rodents and whatnot? I hate pests. Hate is an understatement. I loathe pests, actually, even though I have some soft spots for animals in my heart.

I don’t know what went wrong, but recently I discovered that some of my books and some of the furnitures are being destroyed by pests. I can’t be sure what it is. Is it termites? Roaches? I have no idea…but there are tiny holes everywhere, evidently being eaten by unidentified insects. I couldn’t find the source, but I have taken the initiative to get rid of whatever pests there is by using insecticides.

There are no evidence of any pests, though. So far I have yet to see the remains of termites or roaches anywhere after using the insecticide. ๐Ÿ™ And yet the destruction continues.

This is really upsetting and very annoying. Not sure what to do to stop those unseen enemies from destroying my things and my furnitures. Should I call pest control when I don’t even know where those pests are? I heard pest control can be quite costly. Would they be able to trace those rotten pests for me? I wouldn’t want to waste unnecessary time and money by calling pest control. And besides, I have a young child and a precious pet at home, so I am not really sure if I’m comfortable using excessive chemical that could actually bring them harm at home if not monitored properly. ๐Ÿ™

Any suggestion on what should I do? Any natural remedies you guys can share with me? ๐Ÿ™ I’m really sick and tired of using those sprays and having to mop and clean up those things with dettol and stuff because I’m afraid that my boy and my cat will get poisoned by the residues.

Cleffairy: Expensive lesson learned. As soon as you identify any pests, just kill them. One should never have any mercy towards pests. They are destructive and you should always get rid of them at first glance or they will breed trouble for you and your entire household.

=.= Those are dogs… they are different from my beloved cat. She’s only bossy, will wake my son up for classes and stuff. Very garang wan, this ‘nanny’…not a pest in any way. I dun even have to clean up her shit cuz she pee and poo in the toilet bowl and flush it down herself.

Neway, you can stop that dog from poo-ing in front of your gate every morning. Just go to the pet shop and buy those dog/cat repellent. All u nid to do is just spray it, and those dogs and feline alike will be repelled to go even near your house. Not sure what it’s called, but i’ll check at the petshop for you.

Hopefully it’s not termites, those are really nasty critter, and u probably cant get rid of thm without insecticide. U can trap the cockroach with cockroach house or place soap water at every secluded corner, they are darn scared of fragrance. All the best!

Tell me about it. My house is infested with baby roaches and ants even though I’m a clean freak and keep my house spick and span. I had no choice but to resort to using chemicals… those powdered insect poison cos they keep multiplying. Urrggh! LOATHE them!! In your case, I think it’s most likely silverfish. Very irritating wan, I know. There were some in my closet last time and they made holes in my favourite bajus ๐Ÿ™

    Hi Cleffairy,

Just surfing by from MG’s site.

If they are just thin holes in your books only, it is most likely the presence of sliverfish as mentioned by Chleo’s Mummy (err… the holes in your clothings are most likely caused by moths – they are quite small – about 1cm and almost “whitish” or “creamy” in color). If so, then air your bookshelf or cupboard and then put all your books under the sun for a few hours (preferably under a transparent tarp, in case you forget to bring them in if it rains). The sun will dry them up or kill them or get them out of their hiding places within your books’ pages or covers.

If there are holes in your wood furniture or book shelf and once a while, you see a pile of thin beads of wood waste, then it is due to wood bettle larvae that have emerged and became adult bettles (black and usually less than 1cm) to start their life cycle once again – usually laying eggs in the same furniture or others nearby. It takes years for them to mature as they munch up your wood furniture.

One way to get rid of them is to take the furniture out of the house. Paint kerosene using a paint brush all over the furniture and let it stand outside till the kerosene smell dissipates – could be up to a week. This is troublesome but if the infestation is NOT to advance, it seems to be the only solution that I can find (however, if you do not destroy all of the larvae, even one will start the whole cycle again).

Hopes this helps without you having to use too much insecticides ;P

Oh no… I think you are right! I did see some white powder while inspecting the books and the furnitures. ๐Ÿ™ Thanks for the tips… I’ll see if I can get rid of them using your remedy. ๐Ÿ˜€
