I’m a huge fan of fun and high energy things and so, when I came across the announcement about Retro Klang on social media; an event that showcases the beauty of Malaysian culture in a unique way, I knew I had to join in the fun.
Retro Klang, inspired by another flashmob event known as ‘Keretapi Sarong’ is a public flash mob event organized by UPEN and Locco in conjunction with the 62th Malaysian independence month. Officiated by Y.B. Datuk Abdul Rashid Bin Asari, Selangor State Tourism Exco, the Retro Klang event aimed to introduce tourists attractions in The Royal Town of Klang and showcase the beauty of Malaysian cultural diversity. Highlights of the Retro Klang event includes activities such as the Joget Selangor, traditional food tasting and demo, traditional games, ‘mini treasure hunt’, special train rental exhibition of Trains Tanah Melayu Berhad and many more.
Special train was chartered to ferry participants from KL Sentral to Klang KTM Station. What’s interesting is that the train ride was not just your daily ordinary ride as the chartered train was transformed into a space that fits the retro theme. There are a couple of coaches; The Chillex Coach, The Karaoke Coach, Business Coach and the Royal Coach.
A variety of fun activities were prepared for participants throughout the entire program.
Retro Klang participants were encouraged to dress up in Retro theme or national costume of their choice and here’s among the more interesting one; the Puteri Perak outfit. It’s definitely not something that you can see every day, I assure you.

Joget Selangor performance during the Retro Klang event. The public also joined in the dancing fun. Needless to say, I’m one of those who shamelessly danced on stage with the performers too.
Traditional games were prepared for the public to play.

Traditional orchestra playing beautiful traditional music for the public’s enjoyment.
Traditional kuih demonstration were also held during the event and being a foodie, I spent quite some time sampling delicious traditional cakes during the event.
Joining the Retro Klang flashmob event was indeed fun for me and my family and it was definitely a good way to countdown to the upcoming Malaysia Independence Day. For what it’s worth, I sure look forward to join more events like this in the future.
