Collector’s Pick & The Launching of Tourism Malaysia’s Flea Market Galore Booklet at Amcorp Mall, Petaling Jaya

There was a time when the concept of people coming together to buy, sell and trade used or old goods under one roof in a commercial complex seemed alien to Malaysians. It all changed in 1998 when Amcorp Mall embarked on a bold initiative to create an indoor antiques market inspired by one of the most iconic antiques market in the world – the famed Portobello Road market in the United Kingdom.

Amcorp Mall’s infant flea market started small, with just a handful of pioneering antique enthusiasts proudly displaying their prized collections at the lower ground level of the mall.

19 years later, the number of traders has grown close to 300 strong, delighting Amcorp Mall’s patrons with a spread covering four floors of the mall every weekend.

Now an established flea market destination in its own right, Amcorp Mall’s flea market provides its many traders with an opportunity to supplement their income and serves as a favourite gathering place for antique and collectibles enthusiasts.

Running the flea market is not without its share of challenges. Firstly the diverse personalities of the many traders and tenants needs to be balanced with care. Secondly the whole concept of a flea market where items are traded off tabletops may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Yet browsing through such variety of paraphernalia and mingling with the colourful traders and crowd has an undeniable charm not found in more sophisticated boutique type environments.

Despite its fair share of critics particularly in the early years, Amcorp Mall has persevered and continues to dish out a unique flea market experience ‘malaysian style’ that keeps both traders and shoppers coming back.

Whilst keeping true to its focus on the antiques and collectibles market, Amcorp Mall tries to ensure there is something for everyone by opening up opportunities in some measure for other products as well. In particular this has created another niche in the toy market.

Indeed its very own ‘home-grown talent’, flea market trader Azam Husni Mustafa and his band of buddies ‘The Ultimate Cosplayers’ appear in full character costume some Sundays to thrill shoppers with an upclose encounter with such popular comic/action characters as Spiderman, Ironman, Captain America, BumbleBee, Wolverine and more !

Starting out as a passionate hobby for Azam Husni, trading his collection of toys at the second floor of Amcorp Mall Flea Market has allowed him to truly live out his creative talents. And it is precisely this savoury mix of carnival shopping that makes Amcorp Mall’s flea market a must visit for all.

As the nation marks its 60th year of independence, Amcorp Mall is celebrating the occasion with a dedicated two day event aptly named Collectors Pick. This effort is aimed to take Flea Market Tourism in Malaysia to the next level. Visitors will be able to savour under one roof all manner of oldies, oddities and rarities encompassing antiques, curios, old notes, stamps, collectible toys, books, vinyl records and more.a Grand Extravaganza not to be missed !
