Turtle watching/visit the Turtle Hatchery.

image

Sea turtles are one of the Earth’s most ancient creatures and can be found in all warm and temperate waters throughout the world. Most sea turtles undergo long migrations, some as far as 1400 miles, between their feeding grounds and the beaches where they nest. Sea turtles can be sighted in various beaches in Terengganu, Malaysia, and the private beaches along Resorts World Kijal is one of them.

Basically, the seven species that can be found today have been around for more than 100  million years, since the time of the dinosaurs and they are facing the threat of extinction and it is really difficult to find the population numbers for sea turtles because male and juvenile sea turtles do not return to shore once they hatch and reach the ocean. Only the female sea turtle will return to the same nesting grounds at which they were born and even then, that’s strictly for laying eggs purposes only.

When females come to the shore they dig out a nest in the ground with their back flippers, bury their clutch of eggs and return to the ocean. They emerge at night, move toward the ocean and remain there, solitary, until it is time to mate. Mating season is commonly March-October, depending on the species with 6-10 weeks gestation period. A female turtle could clutch between 70-190 eggs depending on the species.
image

Turtle landings are not uncommon along the private beach of Resorts World Kijal, especially from May-October every year. Turtles can be sighted laying their eggs at night along the beach in Resorts World Kijal, but then again, it’s all about luck. If the timing is right and you happened to be lucky, you’ll be able to spot a sea turtle or two, but don’t worry if you did not spot any on the beach while taking a brisk walk along the beach at night. Resorts World Kijal have their very own Hatchery where turtle eggs that was found along the beach in Resorts World Kijal are relocated so that the the hatchlings have a better chance at survival upon their release to the sea .

image

The hatchery is a part of Resorts World Kijal’s effort to spread awareness on sea turtles and help to repopulate the sea with sea turtles. The turtle eggs that have been collected here are planted in the sand and usually hatched in a 60-day cycle.Temperatures of the sand where the turtles nest determine the sex of the turtle: below 85 degrees Fahrenheit (30ºC) is predominately male; above 85 degrees Fahrenheit (30ºC) is predominately female.

image

Turtle eggs relocation and planting demo. Burying the turtle eggs deep inside. After hatching, the young may take as long as a week to dig themselves out of the nest.

image

Sea turtle hatchlings. When the young hatchlings came out of their eggs, they make their way to the ocean. Few survive to adulthood.

image

If you visited the hatchery during the hatching season (between May to October), you will be able to see/release the hatchlings back to the sea too.

image

Here’s a little trivia about the sea turtles; Every 100 hatchings released, only one or two will survived.

image

Sea turtle mortality rate is very high not only because of the predatory sea but it’s simply the nature of the wildlife where it is all about the survival of the strongest. That said, stop polluting the sea and stop buying turtle eggs. That alone will help in boosting their population.

There is something for everyone in Resorts World Kijal, be it honeymooners, golfers or nature lovers. In all, it is the perfect place to be if you’d like to have an intimate getaway and rest it up.

Homey and Comforting Steamboat Dinner at Chatz Brasserie, PARKROYAL Kuala Lumpur

Feeling chilled to the bones on a rainy day and needs some quick, warm comfort on the tummy? Well, what’s better to have than some sizzling hot steamboat meal with your family or friends?

image

A steamboat meal is originally the Chinese cooking method, prepared with a simmering pot of soup stock at the dining table, containing a variety of foodstuffs and ingredients where the ingredients are placed into the pot while the soup simmers and are cooked at the table. Meant to be shared among 3-5 people per pot, steamboat/hotpot meals signify abundance of sustenance and togetherness and therefore, it is commonly served during get-togethers.

image

If you are looking for some get-together session with comforting and homey steamboat meal, you might want to look into Chatz Brasserie, PARKROYAL Kuala Lumpur. They are currently offering a steamboat dinner meal with some spicy twists in their soup selection.

Here’s sharing with you what you can expect in the steamboat meal from Chatz Brasserie:

image

Fish fillet of the day, Sulu Sea prawns, half shell sea scallops, flower crabs, Norwegian salmon fillet, jellyfish strips, fish rolls, fish balls and crabsticks.

image

Meat and poultry selection features some red and white meat such as Australian beef tenderloin, Australian beef strips, New Zealand mutton and some free range chicken strips.

image

A variety of savoury mountain mushrooms; white button mushrooms, Enoki mushrooms, abalone mushrooms and Shittake mushrooms.

image

Some healthy garden picks ranging from Tianjin cabbage, China leeks, Cameron lettuce, Hong Kong choy sum to black fungus.

image

Bean curd and eggs are thrown into the mix too.

image

Can’t do without the carbs? Fret not.You won’t be left pining for your daily intake of carbs. Included in the steamboat set meal for your dining pleasure are fish noodles, glass noodles, rice vercimile and emperor noodles.

image

There are 4 kinds of soup that you can pick from; Herbal Chicken Soup, Tomyam Soup, Ma La Soup and Kimchi Soup.

image

Herbal Chicken Soup is the ultimate comfort food on a cold day. But I’ve always detest anything that smells like herbs, so this was not exactly pleasing to my palate. I prefer my chicken soup minus all the herbs, thank you very much, but those who enjoys Chinese herbs in their cooking will love this. The soup was sweet and flavourful, especially when it’s paired with seafood. Go for this if you’re into Chinese herbal soup.

image

If you prefer to add a little spice to your broth, the Tom Yam Soup is for you. I absolutely love this one. It was perfectly executed with the sourness and the spiciness of the tomyam paste.

image

Want embark in a fiery adventure? Try the Ma La Soup, made with Sichuan peppercorns. Not for the faint hearted though. The soup is on the spicy side and rather numbing on the tongue.

These ingredients can be enjoyed with condiments and dipping like
chopped garlic, chopped red chilli, soy sauce, home-made chill padi dip, sukiyaki sauce and Black & White sesame dipping sauce.

Pro dining tips: Start off your steamboat meal by dumping veggies, and mushrooms into the pot. Then when you are done with that, work your way into seafood and the meats before ending the meal with tofu, eggs and your choice of noodles. Remember, the flavour of the soup gets stronger and thicker after each ingredients dumped in and it’s best to have bland ones like boiled eggs and noodles last.

The Steamboat Dinner is priced at RM83 nett per person, with a minimum of two diners and available on Sunday to Thursday, from 6:30pm to 10:30pm.

Experiencing Traditional Food in Selangor

This is a side story of my recently published travelogue; Attractions in Klang, Selangor: The Royal Klang Heritage Walk. I thought of stuffing it together with the travelogue, but I wouldn’t want you readers to get all confused cuz these food were served just for us members of the media to enjoy and they are not actually available for the actual “The Royal Klang Heritage Walk” should you sign up for the walk.

image

Still, I’m a foodie at heart and I would like to share with you the unique traditional food that I’ve had the pleasure to enjoy during The Royal Klang Heritage Walk famtrip that my family and I have participated in.

image

Nasi Ambeng. This is a fragrant rice dish that consists of but is not limited to steamed white rice, chicken curry or chicken stewed in soy sauce, beef or chicken rendang, sambal goreng fried tofu, tempeh, and long beans, bergedil, and serunding. It is a popular Javanese cuisine, especially within the Javanese-Malay communities in the Malaysian states of Selangor and Johor as well as in Java, Indonesia.

image

My first Nasi Ambeng experience was back in 2014, during the annual Nasi Ambeng Festival that was held at Banghuris Homestay, Selangor. I’ve liked it then, and still like it now. Nasi ambeng is often served communal dining-style on a platter to be shared among four to five people; especially during festive and/or special occasions such as a wedding, but this time they had it all packed for the Royal Klang Town Heritage Walk to enjoy. The Javanese have another name for an all packed up Nasi Ambeng like this. It’s called the ‘Nasi Berkat’, which can be literally translated as ‘The Blessed Rice’. Sometimes the Javanese would pack up Nasi Ambeng like this to bring home and share the blessing of the sustenence that they have received with their family after certain important events. Hence, the name. No complains though. I get to indulge all I want without feeling shy of stealing a piece of someone else’s side dishes. I reckon nobody like it if they had to share the platter with me though I enjoy the communal dining experience very much. I’m quite a glutton, you see.

image

Two types of desserts were served for our gastronomic pleasure; Wadai Kipeng and Bahulu Kemboja.

image

Bahulu Kemboja. Initially I thought this was made from flour, but I was told that they were made purely from duck eggs. Impressive, I must say and this traditional sweet cakes warrant for seconds and thirds. Great to be had during morning breakfast or an evening snack over a cuppa coffee or tea.

image

Wadai Kipeng is a traditional dessert that is popular in some parts of Malaysia and is synonymous with the Banjar people. In Banjar language, “Wadai” means ‘kuih’ (cakes in English) and Kipeng means “keping”. It literally means Kuih Keping. Commonly served in Banjar people’s wedding, this sweet glutinuos rice dessert were bathed in thick creamy gravy made from palm sugar and coconut milk. I don’t usually fancy sweet food, but this one’s an exception. It’s to die for.

These food I’ve featured are commonly found in Selangor, but not too common that you’ll find it at just about any restaurants or streets in Selangor. They are mostly exclusively served during certain important events in certain ethnic’s home eg: Javanese or Banjar people’s events or weddings.

Attractions in Klang, Selangor: The Royal Klang Town Heritage Walk (RKTHW)

I had the opportunity to visit and explore Klang through The Royal Klang Town Heritage Walk (RKTHW) Merdeka Merdeka Edition program jointly organized by Tourism Selangor, Klang Municipal Council (MPK), Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Railway Berhad (KTMB) on my birthday last weekend and it was a real blast.

image

If you followed me on my Facebook, you’ll probably know that the entire KTM coach celebrated my birthday for me and sang me a birthday song and it rendered me speechless. Now, that’s really something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. Talk about hospitality, theirs definitely exceeds expectations. Thank you KTMB and Tourism Selangor for that arrangement. It means a lot to me.

image

Anyway, my family and I have been to Klang a couple of times, as we have family and friends living in Klang, but certainly not via KTM Komuter. My husband and I usually drove over whenever we’re visiting our family or friends in Klang.

image

Traveling via train to Klang is quite an eye opening experience for me. Unlike driving, I find that traveling via rail is much more relaxing and I can see sceneries that I’ve never seen before while on the road. Truly inspirational, I must say. Having said that, I’ll be making a point to travel by rail more often from this moment onwards.

image

The journey to Klang KTM station from KL Sentral takes just about 1hour. In case you’re wondering, the train fare was RM4.50 for one way trip if you use Touch&Go and RM5.20 if you pay cash. Considering the distance, I must say that the trip was really worth your money. To plan your trip via KTM Komuter, hop over HERE.

Klang, or officially Royal Town of Klang, is a royal town and the former capital of the state of Selangor, Malaysia. Klang is commonly known for it’s food and cultural diversity among the locals, but there’s more to Klang than just its’ seafood or the well known Bak Kut Teh or “Meat Bone Tea”.

The district of Klang existed even before Malacca and was part of the colonial Sri Vijaya and Majapahit governments. The name originated from the Mon-Khmer language “klong” which means warehouse. Klang became important only after the decline of Kuala Selangor following the death of Sultan Muhammad in 1857. In 1875, Klang was chosen as the capital city of Selangor but was replaced by Kuala Lumpur in 1880.

image

Historical sites in the oldest part of the royal town of Klang in Selangor are covered in the Klang Heritage Walk. During the walk you will be able to see clusters of colonial sights, places of worship, schools, fire station, royal gallery, and a warehouse built by a local Malay chieftain.

image

As a royal town and former capital of Selangor, Klang is characterized by historic buildings and quaint, traditional structures. Here’s sharing with you some historic sites that are covered in the Klang Heritage Walk:

image

1. Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery

The Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery. The gallery is about the former Selangor Sultan, the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. The museum building was initially constructed as Sultan Sulaeman Building in 1909. During the British Malaya, the British government used the building as the land and administration office. During the Japanese rule of Malaya, it was used as war headquarter. After the independence of Malaya in 1957, it was used as Klang District office. The museum was initially opened in 1988 as the Memorial Museum. The gallery displays the history and heritage of Sultanate of Selangor since 1766 with more than 2,000 artifacts. The gallery is opened everyday except Mondays from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Location Address: 3, Jalan Stesen, Kawasan 1, 41000 Klang, Selangor

image

2. Old Chartered Bank/Chennai Silk Palace

This building used to be a bank in the olden days. The Chartered Bank. Old Chartered Bank no more though. It is now the home to the Chennai Silk Palace, an Indian boutique shop right in the heart of Klang. Yes, people. This is where you can find latest fashion trends from Bollywood before anywhere else. And the best part of it all? They offer really competitive price.

Location Address: No. 1, Jalan Istana, Selangor, Jalan Istana, klang, Kawasan 1, 41000 Klang, Selangor

image

3. The Royal Klang Club

Third checkpoint during heritage walk is the Royal Klang Club. Head out of rhe Old Chartered Bank Building (the Chennai Silk Palace) and walk over the slope along Jalan Istana, you’d find yourselves in front of the Kelab Diraja Klang (Royal Klang Club). The Royal Klang Club is a social and recreational club established back in 20th century for the British expats in the then Malaya. The place was exclusively for Brits only back then, but access to the Club these days is opened to everyone. While access to the Club is granted only to members, The Royal Klang Heritage Walk participants will get to have a sneak preview of what’s inside the main building of the Club. There’s more than the meet the eyes, this one. You got to enter the building to see for yourselves what’s inside.

Location Address: Jalan Istana, Kawasan 1, 41000 Klang, Selangor

image

4. Istana Shah Alam

Next, the tour will bring you to Istana Alam Shah, the official palace for Selangor’s royal ceremonies and investitures. The palace was built in the mid-20th century and is open to the public twice a week for a visit. The visits usually includes includes a guided tour of some rooms and halls in the Palace building, Muzium Bolasepak (Football Museum) Istana Alam Shah and a tour of the Royal Automobile Gallery. The Palace tour, however, is not covered during Royal Klang Heritage Walk though. You will need another arrangement for that.

Location Address: Jalan Istana, Kawasan 1, 41000 Klang, Selangor

image

5. The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes Klang.

This Gothic, Notre-Dame looking- architecture is known as Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, a Catholic church built in the early 20th century initially to cater for the Indian Catholic community who have settled down in the area. Right next to the church is a school building that is home to 3 different convent schools established just a few years after the church was built.

Location Address No. 114, Jalan Tengku Kelana, Kawasan 1, 41000 Klang, Selangor

image

6. Little India(Jalan Tengku Kelana)

A short straight walk along Jalan Tengku Kelana from the church and the convent schools will bring you to Klang’s Little India. There’s something really ironic about this place. The Little India, which is one of Malaysia’s largest Indian street, actually grew out of an old Chinese settlement. Be prepared. Once you’re here, you’ll have sensory overload. There are loads of dazzling sarees, spices, Indian desserts, snacks and whatnot. And oh, you’ll be hearing Bollywood hit songs in the air as well. You will be treated to the scent of spices, flowers from the garlands, and perhaps curries from the many restaurants that scattered on the street. Shophaholics will take pleasure in this place too. Discounts on goods aplenty. However, the The Royal Klang Town Heritage Walk (RKTHW) is not meant for a shopping trip nor a food hunting trail. Should you want to indulge yourselves in a shopping spree or a food hunt at the Little India, plan another independant trip another time.

Location Address: Jalan Tengku Kelana, Klang, Selangor 41000

image

7. Masjid India/Masjid Tengku Kelana

Located nearby Little India is a mosque. The mosuqe is commonly known as Masjid India Klang or Klang Indian Mosque. The mosque was established in the early 20th century for the Indian Muslim community in the area.

Location Address: Jalan Tengku Kelana, Kawasan 1, 41200 Klang, Selangor

image

8. Klang Fire Station/Muzium Balai Bomba

Klang Fire Station is housed in a small, white & red Victorian building that was built in the late 19th century. The colour scheme reminds me of the Japanese flag. Initially I thought it was a little souvenir left by the Japanese following their occupation back in the 1940s but there’s nothing Japanese anout this as it was built at late 19th century and it is actually a methaphor for the sun never sets on the British Empire. In this Fire station, there is a small room that has been turned into a little gallery of some sort. The room was filled with exibits about the fire brigade and the building itself. There’s one mysterious exhibit inside that caught my attention. It’s a a British-made locked safe cabinet, which has not been opened in decades since the key was nowhere to be found. Made me wonder if there’s treasure, secret documents or even some mummy inside of it. All right, don’t let me scare you. Go and see the stuff for yourself.

Location Address: Jalan Gedung Raja Abdullah, Kawasan 1, 41000 Klang, Selangor

image

9. Gedung Raja Abdullah

Gedung Raja Abdullah built in 1857, it was the residence of Raja Abdullah the Chief of Klang at the time with his family. This is one of the oldest Malay buildings that are still standing in Selangor. The ground floor, however, was used as a warehouss for weaponry, ammunitions, tin ore, mining implements and supplies. The place had also served as the HQ for the first British Resident, state treasury, as well as survey, land and post office. In 1880 this building has became a police station and had remained so for almost a century. Subsequently in 1985, about a decade after the police station moved out, the building was turned into a museum, but sadly, there’s nothing for us to see inside the building right now as it has been closed to the public for a few years now for restoration work.

Location Address: Jalan Gedung Raja Abdullah, Kawasan 1, 41200 Klang, Selangor

If you like doing touristy things like exploring the town and taking some pretty pictures while learning some history bits, this guided tour is definitely for you. The nearly three-hour tour kicks off at 9am from The Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery every Saturday and Sunday. Walk-ins are welcome, but participants are encouraged to register with Tourism Selangor – joint organisers of these tours with the Klang Municipal Council. You may do so HERE.

However, do keep in mind that The Royal Klang Town Heritage Walk is meant for you enjoy sightseeing and not for you to indulge in leisurely shopping or a foodie hunt. So if you want to explore Klang town independently without tour guide and take your own sweet time to explore, fret not. Royal Klang Town Heritage Walk has been selected to be converted on LocoMole to allow both tourist and locals alike to download and explore the rich history and culture of Royal Klang Town independently. LocoMole is kinda like Waze and Google map guids, but for you to explore certain places of interest. You may download the apps at Playstore HERE. Through the apps, you’ll be able to see suggested list of activities at each point of interest in RKTHW walk trail.

So, what are you waiting for? Explore Klang today and be amazed by what the quaint town had to offer.

Tips you might want to follow prior to participating in The Royal Klang Town Heritage Walk:

1. Wear comfortable clothes and footwear. They will be very helpful throughout the 3 hours walk. I wouldn’t encourage high heels or platforms for the ladies. You feet will be killing you by the end of the tour. Flats or sports shoes are a better choice for this.

2. Bring some mineral water or drinking water with you to keep hydrated. The weather in Malaysia can be rather hot at times and Klang is no exception.

3. Use sunblock to keep yourselves from being sunburn.

4. Wear minimal makeups. As mentioned earlier, the weather can be hot and humid and thick makeups tend to melt away and you won’t look good in pictures if that happen.

5. Last but not least, bring some spare cash with you, in case you’d like a quick shopping along the way.

A Sneek Peek: High Line, Resorts World Genting

Dear foodies, I exciting gastronomic news to share with you. Resorts World Genting will soon add another culinary attraction in SkyAvenue soon; High Line.

image

I wasn’t really aware about High Line’s to be honest, but I’ve had the opportunity to get a little sneek peek of what we can expect from High Line when I was attending the Taste MIGF 2018 that was held on September 1-2 at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel recently as the restaurant has participated in Taste MIGF 2018 to give a sneak peek on what they will be offering soon ahead of their opening. I thought I’d share with you what we can expect from High Line when it opens it’s door to the public soon.

image

The highly anticipated restaurant will be located at SkyAvenue, Resorts World Genting and will houses a wide range of international cuisines including sausages, meat, seafood and more. Driven by Chef Muhamad Muhader who has nearly two decades of experience in food preparation and F & B management, High Line will definitely please your palate.

image

Nasi Lemak Lobster. This is definitely the bomb and pretty sensational on the palate and definitely take the modest, all time Malaysian favourite Nasi Lemak to a much more luxurious level. I was told that this will be one of the High Line’s signature when I had em at Taste MIGF 2018. I can’t imagine how wondrous it will be if the actual portion has anything to do with this sample version of it.

image

BBQ Beef Brisket Slider was not too shabby. Burger lovers will definitely appreciate this, but neat eaters will find it quite challenging to eat. It takes some skills to have a mouthful of it as the slider fillings will tend to get sloppy. That’s what sliders are about though. They are supposed to be messy when you take a bite on em.

image

Grilled Sausage with Lamb Merquez. Lamb sausage served on a pretzel bun may look like your ordinary sausage buns or hotdogs, but there’s nothing ordinary about this one. The Grilled Sausage with Lamb Merquez is satisfyingly meaty and were bursting with flavours. The slightly chewy buns provided an interesting experience as well.

The food pictures were from Taste MIGF 2018 where only sampling portion were served and not an actual presentation from the restaurant should you order them off from their menu. The actual portion of each dishes will definitely be bigger than this.

The restaurant is expected to be opening soon in SkyAvenue, so KIV for more updates on High Line.
