Exclusive: A Sneak Peek into Orton Gillingham Learning Approach for Dyslexics with Dr.Choy Su Ling at Altuz Academy

My early motherhood experience is simply a walk in the park. Yes. It was a walk in the park, with rampaging dinosaurs in it with plenty of active volcanic explosions arround, that is.  It was a nightmare, to be honest, especially when my son was diagnosed with autism. Had it my way, I never want to talk about all the mental tortures that I went through during those early years rising my son, but I somewhat believe that other parents, especially Malaysian parents whose children are on the spectrum can benefit from my experience.

As a child with autism, my son’s behaviour and milestones has always been different from the peers his age, and as all of you might know, Malaysians lacks knowledge and awareness on things like this. I lost count on how many times I was being judged harshly for it. The most painful thing was that I was accused for being a failed mother and neglects my son’s education and well being that he turns out ‘that way’; failed in toilet training at appropriate age, failed in teaching him the basics of reading and writing, failed to train him to talk in full sentences and allowed him to be picky with his food, you name it. The worst part of it all is that all these accusations came from close friends, relatives and family, who were supposed to be my pillar of support. They told me off about being a failure to my face, and having one accusations after another being hurled into my face consequently made me slipped into depression for a little while until I joined some Special Needs and Autism Parents Support Group on Facebook that’s based in US. These people are no experts. They are parents or caretaker who are living with persons with autism 24/7 and they helped me out alot.

The thing about Malaysians in general is that most are still living in some pre-historic caves somewhere. Most don’t bother to educate themselves and are still in denial, especially when it comes to children with behavioural disorders and learning disabilities. I have no doubt that most parents in Malaysia don’t even bother to even look up what Autism, Asperger, ADHD, ADD, Dyslexia and whatnot until they had a child who are on the spectrum themselves, and even then, most will be in denial in a little while and felt overwhelming shame for having such children. Some even went as far as to hide away their special need children at home as they  think that would be the best thing they can do for their children and avoid being judged by the society.

When it comes to autism, there’s no children who are exactly the same as the others who are also diagnosed with autism. My son for example is on the spectrum and have loads of other issues as well. The most noticeable ones would be that he is non verbal, lack social and communication skills, have sensory processing disorder and on top of that, he is also dyslexic; which means he have terrible learning difficulties when it comes to reading and writing. My son is a teenager now. In his pre-teen and he is still struggling with reading and writing. Mainstreaming is not an option and I ended up signing up for alternative form of education for him and I am constantly keeping my eyes peeled for education establishment that cater to children with dyslexia.

The lack of experts and proper early intervention program to rectify the reading problems of dyslexic children before they fall behind in traditional schooling can lead to irreparable harm, low self-esteem and a widening gap that becomes increasingly difficult to close. This has negative societal implications and parents should ensure that their dyslexic children are able to read proficiently, just like other neurotypical kids. Here’s sharing with you the Orton Gillingham Learning Approach.

Orton-Gillingham is an instructional approach intended primarily for use with individuals who have difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing of the sort associated with dyslexia and is recognized by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA).

image

The Orton-Gillingham Approach  is now available in Malaysia with the opening of Altuz Academy, a premier education centre for those with dyslexia.

image

Checking out the newly opened Altuz Academy during their open day recently has been somewhat an eye opening experience.

image

The Orton-Gillingham approach was developed in the 1920s by Dr Samuel Orton, a doctor who first discovered dyslexia, together with Anna Gillingham, a gifted teacher and psychologist. This approach has been further supported by over 100,000 scientific studies over 70 years that conclusively showed that a reading approach should include five important pillars: phonemic awareness, systematic phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. In the hands of a skilled instructor, this is a powerful instructional approach that benefits students of all ages and abilities so that learning becomes a rewarding experience.

image

The key features of this approach are multisensory, sequential. incremental, cumulative, individualized, based on phonograms and explicit. And in case you are wondering, Academic Language Therapists at Altuz Academy received vigorous training and supervised practicum accredited by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE) and IDA.

image

Dr Choy Su Ling, together with centre manager Yap Jo Ling created history in the international dyslexia community by being the first two AOGPE-trained academic language therapists from Malaysia.

According to Dr.Choy Su Ling, the founder of Altuz Academy, it is critically important that remedial specialists, educators and teachers working with dyslexic students be vetted, highly trained in an evidence-based approach with oversight and accountability. Literacy training should be comprehensive, accredited by an international organization and include a supervised practicum development.  And the professionals will be continuosly observed and audited by the AOGPE to meet and maintain the high standards of teaching.

image

Yours truly and the founder of Altuz Academy, Dr.Choy Su Ling.

Now, it is understandable that you find it difficult to accept if you discovered that your children are dianosed with Autism, Asperger, ADD, ADHD or other sorts of learning difficulty disorders like Dyslexia or even Disgraphia, but being in denial  got to stop, because early intervention matters and makes a lot of difference helping the children achieve a better quality life. These are not sickness that you can cure via medicine, but disorders that needs intervention. Marital disagreements regarding special need children and playing the blame game between spouses also got to stop as sooner you get yourselves educated and face the truth and reality of the situation, the sooner we can help our special need children, and in this case, help them sail through Dyslexia.

G-Shock Celebrates 35th Anniversary in Malaysia with Absolute Toughness

Any fans of timepieces here? I sure am. And being an Adrenaline junkie that I am, I have always loved timepieces that are not only multi-functional but rugged and tough as well. G-Shock by Casio is one of those timepieces brand that I’ve been growing up with and has always been my companion whenever I’m out jungle trekking or rockclimbing.

image

Speaking of G-Shock, the year 2018 marks 35 years of Casio’s G-Shock being one of the top all time favourite timepiece companion in the world, and Casio Malaysia will be engaging the public with a stream of activities during a product roadshow from 30th July to 5 August 2018 at the Centre Court in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

image

The 35h Anniversary celebrations kicked off with a grand launch on 31 July 2018 at Pavilion KL and saw Lego Sam and his crew of B-boys deliver their hair-raising power moves on stage to signify the launch of G-SHOCK’s 35h Anniversary. Meanwhile, the backdrop for this spectacular performance is a specially curated art canvas by prominent graffiti artist Kenji Chai. Kenji’s interpretation of G-Shock’s Absolute Toughness is depicted in a vibrant giant canvas that instantly catches the eye of the visitors. Both Lego Sam and Kenji Chai have masterfully propelled their individual expertise into popular culture and as such shares similarities to G-Shock’s dominant pop-culture icon status.

image

To commemorate the occasion, the roadshow will chronicle the history and evolution of the classic 5600 series, also known as the Origin Series, which evolved from the first-ever G- Shock DW-5000C. The Origin Series which will be displayed for the entire duration of the roadshow, eaned G-Shock its Absolute Toughness reputation through a combination of four core components – Structure, Function, Design and Material.

image

Throughout the week-long roadshow, visitors will be challenged to a series of Absolute Toughness fun physical toughness challenges. Some activities visitors can look forward to are the Human Claw Challenge, where visitors are hoisted up over a pool filled with G- Shock balloons and try their hand at trying to claw up balloons which contain tickets to prize redemptions.

image

And here’s yours truly, attempting to best the G-Shock Absolute Toughness Human Claw Challenge.

image

I got to admit, the challenge was pretty tough.

image

It’s really been awhile since I’ve done some Adrenaline pumping stuff like this, but guess what? I managed to win myself a G-Shock watch for my absolute toughness.

image

It’s one of their rugged GA-800SC series in white. Needless to say, I was a happy camper.

image

Spotted a punching bag at a small corner of the roadshow, and decided to give that a go too while. It was so satisfying, I must say and I immediately feels all my stress being punched away one by one. Off the record, perhaps I can take up boxing to keep myself mentally fit and healthy.

image

Another activity that aims to emphasize G-Shock’s toughness is the King of the Hammer where visitors gets to hammer away at an actual G-Shock watch. You’re allowed to bang the watch as hard as you can, no repercussion. Now, isn’t that fun?

Should you visit Pavilion Kuala Lumpur from 30th July to 5 August 2018 , drop by and try out some of the challenges.

35 Years of Absolute Toughness is a fantastic milestone for the brand and I am surely looking forward ti seeing G-Shock continuosly push the boundaries of rugged timepiece innovation.

IPV6 to Change The Internet Landscape in Malaysia

image

The Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPV6) Dialogue session organized here today by Persatuan IPV6 Malaysia and Adasta Network Sdn Bhd with the theme- “Hastening the pace of embracing IPv6,” received thumbs up from about 200 participants for the opportunity to hear from prominent local and international speakers.

The IPv6 discussion attracted key stakeholders from the HR and IT sectors who were given an insight into the practical steps of the last mile to embrace the New Internet World based on IPv6.

The event was officiated by Dato Dr Mohd Ali bin Mohamad Nor, Secretary General of the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia. In his speech, Dato Dr Mohd Ali congratulated Adasta Network Sdn Bhd for their recent feat in winning a Special Award from the Global IPV6 Forum and for their unstinting efforts in the implementation and progress of IPV6 Malaysia.

“I am informed that tomorrow, 26th July, there will be a graduation ceremony of the Network Engineers and IPV6 Security personnel. Congratulations to those who have completed the course and successfully commissioned by the Global IPV6 Forum,” said Dato Dr Mohd Ali.

image

Panel of speakers from left: Prof. Dr. Sureswaran Ramadas – Emeritus Chair of Global IPv6 Forum Malaysia, Dr. Latif Ladid – Founder & President of Global IPv6 Forum, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Omar Amer Abuaddalla – Head of Training of IPv6 Forum and En. Kamal Hisham Kamaruddin – Head of Operation of Malaysia Research and Education Network (MYREN).

Meanwhile, the IPv6 discussions worked in spreading the right messages to the Malaysian stakeholders and to define its own national step-by-step transition plan to IPv6 .

Prominent Speakers, namely Dr Latif who is the Founder and President of The Global IPVe Forum and Professor Emeritus Sureswaran Ramadas, Emeritus Chair of The Global IPV6 For Education were present to give their views and updates during the dialogue a major boost.

The discussion featured a gathering of local HR and IT Heads as well as academicians and students with the speakers, discussing and exchanging knowledge and ideas on the competitive advantage of being early adopters of IPV6.

“There is nothing more encouraging for us as Speakers than seeing people bravely asking difficult questions and openly sharing a variety of perspectives. I think this eventually spoke of the quality of the exchange between us and the audience, as well a interests towards social issues on IPV6 in Malaysia,” noted Dr Latif Ladid.

Meanwhile, Professor Emeritus Sureswaran Ramadas said the dialogue session was a very valuable reference in understanding local and global Internet industry trends and usage patterns, the web’s impact on traditional politics, economy, society and culture, and future directions of related policies

“With IPV6 embracement, Malaysia can be propelled into a top-5 nation globally or in the Asia Pacific region, hence competing internationally using ICT through increased productivity and sustainability,” added Sureswaran.

The main goal of this dialogue session was to promote IPv6 adoption through a wide range of actions encouraging public administration, users and industrial stakeholders to take decisive steps to accelerate the implementation of IPv6, so as to ensure Malaysia’s readiness to face the expected depletion of IPv4 addresses. In addition to this main goal, the prompt and efficient adoption of IPv6 offers Malaysia significant opportunities to boost innovation and develop a leading role in advancing the Internet. The organizers were confident that the dialogue session provided all participants with a right frame of mind and directionto put to use IPV6 in making a truly ubiquitous society a reality and in further developing the Internet.

“We’re very pleased to see the growing momentum forlPv6 adoption in Malaysia as a result of these discussions today. Common availability of IPv6 connectivity is first andforemost in IPv6 adoption; in addition, the Internet community must consider education and training of IT managers, as well as network security during the transition,” said Ms. Bhaawani of Adasta Network Sdn Bhd.

The Internet World has been using the Internet for decades. Despite its tremendous success, IPv4 is showing signs of strain especially in its fast depleting IP address space and its growing security concerns. IPv6 will definitely preserves today’s Internet, and adds much more, such as virtually unlimited IP address to connect everyone and everything, and Malaysia will most definitely be one of the pioneering country that will transition from IPv4 to IPv6 where cyberspace is concerned.

Visitors were spoilt for choice at the array of coffee machines and accessories, coffee beans and tea leaves, and the wide selections of heady brews and concoctions.

Beat The Heat with Coway at Coway Run 2018

Are you a runner? Fitness enthusiasts? Adrenaline addict? Or simply someone who just love to have fun? Well, I have some good news for all of you out there.

It’s that time of the year again as COWAY Run 2018 makes its second year comeback to be held on 7 October 2018 at MAEPS, Serdang; where once again the race towards a healthy and pure lifestyle is placed on the pedestal with a ‘cool’ theme and a charity element.

For the first time, COWAY Run 2018 adopts a theme “Beat the Heat” – where a “cooling” run course is designed to allow sprinters to run comfortably and as coolly as possible.

Elaborating on the inspiration behind this year’s theme was Mr. Kyle Choi Ki Ryong, Managing Director of Coway (M) Sdn. Bhd. who said, “Living in a tropical country has its perks, but perhaps the heat and humidity from running can be a deterrent for many as it accelerates fatigue and dehydration. Thus with COWAY Run 2018, we aim to create a cool and comfortable experience for our runners to Beat the Heat’ through an exciting route. Designed to keep runners cooling throughout the race, the route is set up with water sprinklers, mist tunnels and wind tunnels that would add an element of surprise for the runners. Furthermore, COWAY Run 2018 will also be channelling proceeds from the run to support its annual CSR initiative, the Happy Water Project-where indigenous communities are supplied with clean and pure water Since the very beginning, the nation’s leading water specialist is dedicated to promote good health for consumers by providing clean and safer water, reminding them of the importance of staying hydrated.

Mr. Kyle shared that many among our midst still do not have access to clean and pure water, and this issue is often taken for granted. With proceeds channelled towards the Happy Water Project, Coway is committed to help the less fortunate by providing rainwater supply devices especially in rural areas

“At Coway, we believe everyone deserves the best without exemption, we recognised COWAY Run 2018 as an apt platform to raise awareness towards this issue among our community. As such, we pledge to donate RM10 from every ticket purchased to the cause of the H@ppy Water Project,” said Mr Kyle.

COWAY Run 2018 will include distances of 10KM and 5KM for both men and women for the following categories: Open (for ages 16 and above), International(for ages 16 and above), and Veteran (for ages 40 and above).

Famous Malaysian fitness model, Jordon Yeoh joins again this year to run alongside participants while he cheers and motivates them as they take every step towards the finishing line – breaking the stereotype that one does not have to be a professional athlete in order to participate in a race.

Participants with children will also enjoy an exciting children’s obstacle course where children can have their own time of fun while their parents or guardians were running at the race. Additionally Coway aims to bring a taste of Korea to the grounds with a Korean Village setup equipped with food trucks, photo props and a live band to entertain the crowd.

“This year’s run will no doubt be bigger and better than before-bringing friends and families together on this special occasion and making a change to live pure and to take a step forward in leading an active lifestyle,” said Mr Kyle

“Coway is certain that this platform will not only create awareness on the adoption of healthy and active lifestyle but to also provide individuals-especially the less fortunate-with clean and pure water in hopes of minimising the risk of medical problems while bringing joy and improving lives.”
