Must Eat Street Food in Penang, Malaysia

Planning a trip to Penang, Malaysia? Penang is a state in northwest Malaysia comprising mainland Seberang Perai and Penang Island. Penang is known as the Pearl of The Orient and is a home to a  UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are plenty of tourists attractions and historical places to visit in Penang, but if you’re a foodie, you wouldn’t want to miss out on the food that Penang has to offer. Penang is well known for being a food heaven.

Credit: @Ellie Toh

With so many delicious things to eat in Penang, this list is by no means complete or comprehensive, but I do hope it helps you to go around and enjoy the taste of Penang.

1. Assam Laksa

Credit: @FoodieFC

Assam Laksa is one of Penang’s signature dishes. It’s tamarind-based so it’s sour compared to the coconut-based curry laksas that are popular in Singapore. The main ingredients in a typical bowl of Penang assam laksa are mackerel, lemongrass, galangal, and chili. Assam Laksa are typically garnished with mint, pineapple, onion slices, cuccumber, torched ginger flower and sweet prawn paste. It’s really delicious but the smell is a bit pungeant, so this dish is a bit exotic and requires an acquired taste for it.

This hawker stall by Air Itam market at the foothills of Kek Lok Si Temple is one of the most famous places in Penang that is selling Assam Laksa. It’s a family business and it’s been running for more than 30 years as of writing

Address: Jalan Pasar, Ayer Itam
Operating hour: 10:30AM-7PM

2. Pasembor

Credit: @Ellie Toh

Pasembor is a Malaysian salad consisting of cucumber, potatoes, beancurd, turnip, bean sprouts, prawn fritters, spicy fried crab, fried octopus or other seafoods and served with a sweet and spicy nut sauce. Pasembor is unique in the sense that you can actually pick what you want to include on your plate, but my advice is don’t take any seafood if you are traveling on a shoestring. It can be rather pricey.

Address:
Hussain Pasembur
Padang Kota Lama
Penang
Operating hour: 12PM-12AM

3. Nasi Kandar

Credit: @Mamu Pulau

Nasi kandar is a meal of rice that is served with curries and side dishes. It’s a Malay meal, and it originated in Penang. Nasi Kandar Line Clear is pretty much well known in Penang and offers some of the cheapest nasi kandar in town. You can get a meal of biryani, chicken, egg, vegetables, and a mix of gravies for just RM6.

Address:
Line Clear Nasi Kandar
Address: 177 Penang Road, Penang
Opening Hours: Open 24 hours

4. Char Koay Teow

Credit: @Ellie Toh

Char koay teow is considered by many to be the most iconic street food in Penang. It usually consists of flat rice noodles stir-fried with light and dark soy sauce, chili, fermented shrimp paste, prawns, blood cockles, bean sprouts, chopped Chinese chives, and egg.
Penangites are possessive of this dish so everyone has their opinion on which place serves the best, but I personally recommend the ones at Padang Kota Lama.

Padang Kota Lama
Penang
Operating hour: 12PM-12AM

5. Oh Chien

Credit: @Ellie Toh

This is basically oyster omelette. Other variations usually contain potato starch to thicken the omelette but the Penang version is made with rice flour batter to give it a lighter, crisper texture. Oh Chien is a popular street food in Penang and is available almost everywhere in Penang but we had ours at Padang Kota Lama.

Address:
Padang Kota Lama
Penang
Operating hour: 12PM-12AM

Must try dessert: Cendol

Credit: @Ellie Toh

Indulging yourself with a bowl of Penang famous cendol is a must, especially after enjoying all the heavy and delicious street food. Upon reaching Penang Road, you will spot enthusiastic crowd queuing patiently to taste the legendary teow chew chendol. Trust me, this is the street food you shouldn’t miss if you are visiting Penang.

Address: Jalan Penang, George Town, 10450 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Operating hour: 10AM – 7:30PM

You’ll never go hungry in Penang. Penang is actually a foodie town. There are delicious things to be at all corners of Penang, so do consider to forget about your diet for a little while when you are in Penang.

Penang can easily be accessed internationally, especially via Singapore. Flights from Singapore to Penang is quite frequent, so if you are traveling from Singapore to Penang, you may book Cheap Air Ticket from Traveloka. You won’t regret it, I assure you.

Be The Hottest Gossip in Town With Althea Bare Essentials

Althea is not new in the beauty and skincare industry. It’s been a rave among Malaysian women since a few years back, but if you are not familar with ‘Althea‘, let me gossip to you a lil bit about it.

image

Althea is actually a one-stop online shop that focuses on Korean beauty products. That means you can buy and have all your K-beauty products sent all the way directly from Korea without a fuss.

image

Now, after a few years being established in Malaysia, Althea has finally launched its very own skincare line.

image

Althea Bare Essentials. This is the new Athea’s baby. A skincare line that strips skincare routine to minimal basic. My first impression on this new skincare line from Althea is that it looks really minimalistic, plain and clean. To be honest, I think is is a really bold move, considering everything in the market needs beautifully decorated packaging to attract buyers. But then again, Althea has always delivered the best of skincare, and on a personal level, I think this would be great as well, after all, great products does not need frills on it’s packaging. The products speaks for itself, and for those who appreciates real beauty would understand that less is actually more. Riding on today’s current minimalism movement, Althea’s Bare Essentials focuses on skincare fundamentals and drops all the non-essentials. The Bare Essentials range consists of three hypoallergenic products suitable for any skin types for a greater skin. With effective formulas, these straightforward products from Althea is an epitomize of simple perfection.

image

The Contour Cleanser 150g (RM23.00) Packed with soothing Ice Plant and detoxifying Lemon Myrtle extracts, this cleanser is densely filled with micro capsules that burst upon contact with water to gently cleanse, exfoliate, and detoxify skin. The Contour Cleanser helps to promote blood circulation, and reduces bloating and swelling for a defined, V shape look.

image

The Primer Water 200ml (RM43.00). This is a hybrid skincare product which is a hydrating toner and a primer in one. The Primer Water contains patented dewdrop technology that gently fills the gaps between pores and allows hydration to penetrate deep within the layers of the skin. Made with Snow Lotus extracts, this skincare heavy hitter has an incredibly smooth and silky texture that enhances the skin’s natural glow, leaving you with the perfect canvas. This also acts as a ‘primer’ and helps to smoothens skin as a base before putting on makeup.

image

The Fixer Cream 50g (RM50.00). This non-oily, quick-absorbing formula harnesses the power of Trehalose, an ingredient found in the cactus plant that prevents its moisture loss, to provide the skin with 24-hour hydration. This nourishing wonder cream is also rich in antioxidants derived from Camellia Sinensis (green tea) seed oil, and helps to promote collagen regeneration using Baobab Tree extracts. Upon application, your skin is left looking great and feeling bouncy to the touch.

My thoughts after using the products:

1. Skincare routine is no longer a hassle as it is not as easy as 1,2, 3 and easy to follow.
2. The products is really gentle on the skin and does not leave any tightening sensation on my skin.
3. The cleanser does not make my skin feels dry or itchy after usage.
4. The Water Primer is love. It works well to moisturize my skin.
5 The Water Primer helps me to make my makeup stays on up to 13 hours without the need to retouch em. So, this is a real winner in my eyes.
6. My complextion feels really smooth after a few days of usage.
7. My skin looks cleaner and much more radiant after using the products for some time.
7. There was no more acne breakouts after using the products.
8. I’m cursed with dry skin. It can sometimes peels off, especially durinng dry seasons. Using these products helps to improve my skin’s condition. The Water Primer and the Fixer Cream is a miracle. It helps to keep my skin hydrated and stay hydrated for a long time.
9. I’ve shared the product with my son who is in his teens. He has plenty of nasty breakouts due to the raging hormones, but after using these, the acne are reduced.
10. The products are really gentle on the skin, and actually smells good and is even suitable for men and teenagers.

Would I recommend this Bare Essentials Skincare line from Althea? Well, yes. Definitely. It is a must have, especially for ladies who are always busy and find it hard to discipline themselves to follow an elaborate skincare regime to maintain a beautiful and youthful look.

All 3 products are available for purchase at Althea for just RM116 and Althea is giving out an additional 10% off with a free special edition mirror if you purchase now. You’re just one click away from beautiful and radiant complextion, so head on over to www.althea.kr now.

Things have been crazily hectic for me and my family these days and it’s been awhile since my husband and I took some time off for some real R&R. Our room was unit 1504; located on the 15th floor of the hotel.

image

Security is top notch here in Armada Hotel Petaling Jaya. And access to rooms are by using card keys.

image

Our room was a Duluxe, with extra bedding upon request.

Needless to say, the bed was really comfy bed and we slept through the night like a baby.

One thing that I like about Armada Hotel Petaling Jaya is the all staying guests are given access to the complimentary high speed WiFi. Definitely a plus point especially for those who needs to stay connected all the time.

image

My favourite spot. The view is amazing from the 15th floor.

image

If there’s one thing I like about the bathroom is the mirrors. They have mirrors that enable you to see your reflection in almost every angle.

three private suites with karaoke entertainment in every suite. My husband and I love to sing together. It is what we used to do during our date nights. Needless to say, we sang our hearts that night during our stay with Armada Hotel Petaling Jaya.

image

In addition to karaoke, the biggest
suite, the Gold Suite also features a British pool table and an Electronic Darts machine. Perfect for
guests who prefer to entertain in private. Merchant LIVE is closed on Sundays and Public Holidays.

Utara Coffee House also serves as a venue for private functions, but only with prior booking and arrangement.

Editor’s Pick: What to Eat in Medan Selera SkyAvenue, Resorts World Genting

Many years back, when I was a teenager, someone once asked me what I’m good at while proceeding to compare me to my peers who are smarter and multi-talented. I was young and it was quite a blow to my self-esteem, knowing that I wasn’t as good as those who were my age. I wasn’t pretty or popular, and I was just an average student, and I had nothing to show off about.

Fast forward 15 years later, I’m still not good at anything; but that’s fine, cuz I’m pretty much good at spotting good food; and food is always a comfort and makes me happy, regardless of the situation.

image

Anyway, speaking of good food, I spotted another place to dine in SkyAvenue, Resorts World Genting; the newly opened Medan Selera.
image

Located at Level G of SkyAvenue mall, Medan Selera offers all sorts of delicious food that will satisfy even the fussiest foodie. They have a wide variety of delicacies for your to choose from, but here’s recommending some of the not to be missed food items at the Medan Selera;

image

The Rice section offers all sorts of mouthwatering rice dishes. If you are looking for something filling and worth yhe calories, this is the section that you need to take note of. Here’s some of the must try at the Rice section;Nasi Kerabu, Nasi Briyani with Lamb Varuval, Nasi Kandar with Crispy Fried Prawns and Nasi Briyani with Sotong.

image

Nasi Kerabu. Nasi kerabu is a traditional Malay rice dish that originates from the East Coast. It is a type of mixed rice with assorted herbs, in which blue-coloured rice is usually eaten with salted fish or fried chicken. The Nasi Kerabu from the Medan Selera is served with a side of fried fish, stuffed green chillies, salted egg and keropok ikan. Highly recommended to those who loves savoury and strongly flavoured food.

image

Nasi Briyani with Lamb Varuval. Fancy something meaty with your rice? Go ahead and order the Nasi Briyani with Lamb Varuval. The lamb varuval is mildly flavoured and complements the fragrant nasi briyani well.

image

Nasi Kandar with Crispy Fried Prawns. Nasi Kandar is something commonly sold in Mamak restaurants in Malaysia. Some claimed that you can only get the best Nasi Kandar in mamak joints and they swear by this statement. But this is not true. The Nasi Kandar sold here in Medan Selera SkyAvenue is to die for. The Nasi Kandar comes in a set where you can choose whether you want the accompanying dish be fried chicken, fried crabs, prawns, etc. I opt for the one with prawns and it does not disappoint. The Nasi Kandar comes with a side of papadoms, pickled cucumber slices and salted egg. The prawns were adeptly fried while the accompanying curries are not overly overwhelming on the palate. Highly recommended.

image

Nasi Briyani with Sotong is definitely something you would want to try if you would like to have seafood with your briyani rice. I usually don’t go for seafood side dishes when I eat Nasi Briyani. I’m more into lamb curries or fried chicken, but I’m glad I made an exception this time around as this curried squid is simply divine.

image

There are all sorts of noodles being offered at the Laksa and Noodle section, but we only managed to try Mee Rojak, Laksam and Bihun Goreng Singapore. These came highly recommended by the staff over there.

image

Mee Rojak is a street delicacy commonly found in Northern states of Malaysia like Penang, Kedah and Perlis. Each states have their own representation of Mee Rojak. Not sure the one served in Medan Selera originates from which state, though. The sauce is rather creamy and sweet in comparison to the savoury and spicy ones that I’m familar with. Nevertheless, the Mee Rojak is still uniquely delicious.

image

Laksam is a variety of Laksa noodle dish that originates from the East Coast. Commonly found in Kelantan, Laksam’s soup is savoury but much creamier and rich in comparison to it’s Penang/Kedah counterpart. Fans of Laksam, rejoice. You no longer have to travel all the way to the East Coast to enjoy this as Laksam is offered permanently on Medan Selera’s menu.

Some of the customers favourites here are their Fried Calamari Rings, Fish&Chips and Crispy Fried Chicken. These fried food are beyond tempting and instead of fighting off our desires, we decided to indulge and give it a go.

Fried Calamari Rings is served with a side of fries and generous amoung of chilli sauce and ketchup. The Calamari Rings are coated in a flavoured batter and then deep fried. The portion is just nice for one person, but small eaters might want to share this with another.

The food in Medan Selera surpassed my expectations, considering that this place is just categorized as a food court. As far as I’m concerned, the food that are sold in food courts are usually mediocre in taste, but not the one in Medan Selera SkyAvenue. They’re really good. And the best part? The price that comes with the food are affordable too. Pricing starts from RM15 per item. I guess the Medan Selera will be my next favourite lurk whenever I visit Resorts World Genting from now onwards.
