Selangor: A Safe Destination to Visit During Covid19 RMCO Period

Travelling to new places may bring a lot of wonders to one’s life but to some people, travelling may come with worries especially to solo travellers. The main concern that most tourists and travellers often think of before visiting a place is always the safety and cleanliness aspect. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory states, safety is human’s second priority after physiological needs. If a person is able to feel safe in a place, it acts as a pull factor to motivate the person to travel.
Selangor is one of the most-visited States in Malaysia, most probably because the State emphasizes on safety to protect both the citizens and travellers. The Selangor State Government with its authority ensures the State to be well-supervised from all aspects of safety so the citizens and travellers can roam the State with fewer worries.

One of the things which would come across a tourist’s mind when visiting a place is whether or not the place is supervised by the Tourist Police. Good news to all; the State of Selangor has a dedicated law enforcement unit called the Tourist Police who are often placed at popular areas such as Batu Caves, Sepang Goldcoast, KLIA and LCCT. They will guard and patrol around the areas to curb any mischief conducts or crimes. With the presence of the Tourist Police, tourists especially women and solo travellers will not have to worry much on their safety. The headquarters of Selangor’s Tourist Police is located in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya.

As an act pretty much associated with travelling, shopping should be able to be carried out in confidence too. Some travellers may be afraid of pickpockets and robbery. As mentioned earlier, malls and shopping centres in Selangor are one of the areas placed with the Tourist Police; hence tourists will be able to shop at ease.

On the other hand, Sunway Pyramid located in Bandar Sunway is the first mall in Malaysia equipped with the ‘panic button’ feature. Shopping centres in Selangor are also often equipped with ample number of CCTVs and mall guards to maintain the safety of their visitors. The guards have been trained to familiarise with the footprint of these premises in preparation to help visitors with finding their ways around.

Selangor is also blessed with natural attractions such as FRIM Kepong, Chilling Waterfalls, Kanching Waterfalls Eco Park and Chongkak Park and Resort. Tourists may wonder on the safety and cleanliness of these places. Do not worry, they are well taken-care of by trained staff, as well as placed with jungle rangers to extend help in times of need. Besides, there are also sufficient dustbins located in these areas to maintain cleanliness. In 2018, Tourism Selangor collaborated with Firefly Sdn Bhd in a CSR campaign, “Clean & Green” to maintain the cleanliness of Sungai Kanching Waterfalls Eco Park. The campaign which required tourists to collect rubbish in the area for lucky draw entries received an overwhelming response from the participants.

Furthermore, restaurants and F&B outlets in Selangor are inspected regularly by the Ministry of Health and given grades in terms of cleanliness. Therefore, tourists have the choice to choose from either grade A or B restaurants to dine or order takeaways from. Recently, the Municipal Council of Subang Jaya (MPSJ) has enforced stricter SOPs for the grading of F&B premises. The new regulations are to ensure restaurant owners to follow the guidelines in operating their businesses. This helps the public and tourists to feel a lot safer and more convinced to dine-in or order food from these premises.

In addition, a stricter set of SOPs will be imposed on food establishments throughout the State of Selangor following the Covid-19 pandemic. People are also encouraged to order food via delivery services or takeaways. However, they can still dine at food premises by ensuring social distancing with a table distance of at least 1 meter from one another.
Being ahead of the game, the Selangor State Government has introduced the SElangkah: Langkah Masuk dengan Selamat mobile application which is the first to be developed and established in Malaysia for Covid-19 contact tracing. Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, Dato’ Menteri Besar Selangor in a statement on May 4th said, SElangkah was built to virtually track the movement of the public in effort to control the outbreak of Covid-19 in Selangor.

The application which is managed by Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI) uses a basic concept of a fast and easy individual registration before entering a business premise in the State by scanning their respective QR code. The access to this information is granted to the Selangor’s Health Department, Government agencies and local authority or Pihak Berkuasa Tempatan in order to track an individual for an efficient process of health screening and quarantine in the case of confirmed Covid-19 cases in any of the premises.

Business operators in the State of Selangor are also urged to conduct a temperature screening prior allowing entry, as long as placing hand sanitizers at their premises. Some premises even set up a term on which customers are required to wear masks and impose a limitation on the number of customers allowed to be in the premise in order to reduce congestion. There are more than 700,000 registered businesses for the use of the application SElangkah as of May 7th.

Next, there is an extensive list of accommodation for tourists to choose from in Selangor, ranging from budget hotels, chalets, homestays, service apartments, to luxurious hotels and resorts. Most of these accommodations are registered with local authority and safe for travellers. They also use electronic keys instead of conventional ones, even for budget hotels, and are well-equipped with CCTVs. In order to maintain the safety of guests during their stay post Covid-19, hotel operators in Selangor are urged to follow stricter SOPs listed out by the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) and Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC).

Firstly, hotel operators are required to implement social distancing measures, as well as provide training to staff on the SOPs for business operation during the Recovery Movement Control Order (CMCO). They are also required to enhance their cleaning measures especially on high-touched areas such as light switches, door handles, and TV remote controls. Standard temperature screening, and the placement of sanitization and disinfection products is mandatory. In regard to food preparation, kitchen staff need to abide to the SOPs such as undergo health screening, and wear face masks and gloves at all times when handling food. New and stricter hygiene protocols and air quality control have also been introduced for safety regulations.

In addition, Golf Clubs in Selangor are back in operation imposing tight hygiene SOPs to ensure the safety of the golfers. Members are required to check-in and non-members are required to fill in Health Declaration Forms. Both members and non-members must undergo a mandatory health screening. On top of that, separation plastics are installed in all buggies, only 4 golfers are allowed on the tee box, golfers need to ensure a 1-meter distance when queuing and starter huts are not open for seating. These SOPs are imposed to ensure the Golf Clubs will be back in business, with an emphasis on safety and cleanliness. Some Golf Clubs in Selangor such as Kota Permai Golf & Country Club have also taken extra precautionary measures with the introduction of “contactless ball extractors”.

Mr. Azrul Shah Mohamad, General Manager of Tourism Selangor in a statement shared, “Tourism Selangor welcomes the re-opening of domestic tourism with open arms as many know, tourism is among the most-affected sectors due the Covid-19 turmoil. The implementation of RMCO allows business operators in Selangor to plan and execute new strategies to attract tourists and rebuild the economy. The Selangor State Government through Tourism Selangor has also set a new target of 6 million tourist arrivals in 2020. This is not impossible to achieve as Selangor had managed to reach its target of welcoming 7.7 million tourists in 2019”.

“To foster domestic tourism, Tourism Selangor has introduced the “Pusing Selangor Dulu!” Campaign which focuses on the domestic travel market. We are also working on organising E-Travel Fair 2020 on our digital platform as one of the initiatives to effectively promote and market travel packages as well as discounts offered by our tourism operators. Tourism Selangor will also collaborate with the Media for Media FAM Trip Programmes, as well as with the industry players for promotional Programmes such as “Jelajah Pesona Selangor” and scheduled Business-to-Business (B2B) sessions, En Azrul Shah further shared.

With all that being said, it is evident that Selangor is indeed a safe and clean State to visit. The Selangor State Government is doing their best to ensure the safety of both the residents and travellers in the State, especially after the strike of Covid-19. It is done by implementing stricter SOPs and hygiene protocols to all business operators in the State including the ones highly-sought by tourists such as retail, accommodation and F&B.

The regulations concerning safety and cleanliness will be looked into regularly for the need of being tightened following the outbreak. As domestic tourism is now re-open from June 10th, the State of Selangor’s emphasis on the standard of hygiene proves the State is a tourism-friendly destination providing optimum comfort. Tourism Selangor as the State’s Tourism Promotion Board will continue highlighting the State’s tourism attractions and appeal on their revamped official website, www.selangor.travel and social media accounts, welcoming domestic travellers to explore the State with their catchy “Pusing Selangor Dulu!” tagline.

Hence, making the food rich in flavours! Now, giving you the best of Selangor, we highlight here the traditional flavours for you to try making at home.

Pecal

Pecal is a common appetiser that can be found just about anywhere in Selangor. Known to be a traditional Javanese salad that merely consists of vegetables topped with a mouth-watering peanut sauce that can also be served with Ketupat or Lontong. The preparation in making Pecal is extremely simple so you can easily try it at home at any time! The key ingredients to prepare this dish are peanuts or groundnuts for the gravy or which we call ‘kuah’, tofu, bean sprout, long beans and cucumber. It is that easy. So, what are you waiting for? Give it a try now!

Nasi Ambeng

Nasi Ambeng is usually served in a form of a platter which can be shared with four to five people per serving. It consists of a variety of food choices that will just blow your mind. When it comes to preparing this Javanese-Malay dish, you should not miss out on its side dishes which are chicken, fried noodles, long beans, sambal tempe accompanied by white rice that is served in banana leaf! In Selangor, Nasi Ambeng is normally served at festivals or large gatherings or locally known as ‘Kenduri’.

Sambal Taun

Known as Sambal Taun or Sambal Tahun, this unique dish is famous among Selangorians. It originates from the Javanese early settlers and has become a traditional food of Selangor ever since. This dish is said to be spicy because of the amount of chili used in its preparation. Hence, the name sambal. Here in Selangor, the protein is taken from cow skin but it is commonly switch to either clams, cow lungs or even anchovies, according to one’s preference. Other ingredients needed to complete this one of a kind main dish are red onions, garlic, shrimp paste, coconut milk, oil, tamarind paste, a pinch of salt and sugar. In the past, it is believed that this dish was served during Eid celebration!

Wadai Kipeng

In the tongue of the Banjar people, ‘Wadai’ predominantly means ‘Kuih’, while ‘Kipeng’ is refers to pieces. Back in the day, it has been traditionally practiced by the Banjar community to plate up Wadai Kipeng on their Thanksgiving ceremony! It goes without saying, to prepare this porridge-like dessert, the must-have ingredients are glutinous rice flour, coconut, palm sugar, granulated sugar and some pandan leaves! This is a perfect sweet ending to your meal.

Bahulu Kemboja

We named it the ‘old-timers’ favourite traditional kuih that is still popular up to this day. Bahulu Kemboja can be served whenever you like, be it for breakfast, or even during teatime, well you choose! Having its own speciality, this kuih is sold widely but it is undeniably though to find one that taste as original as the Selangor one today. You can always try making one at home and you may be surprised at what good of a cook you are! To maintain the uniqueness and moisture of the kuih, the ingredients needed are original pandan essence straight from its leaves, wheat flour, rice flour, some coconut milk, eggs, sesame seeds for topping and of course, sugar and salt to give taste!

It is truly a blessing to have such amazing flavours and dishes in just one state. From appetisers, main dishes, desserts and teatime snacks, all these traditional cuisine is a reflection of how splendid Selangor can be!

Inspiring Children During Covid-19 Crisis, One Story at A Time with #SaveWithStoriesMY

Covid-19 has undeniably affected our lifestyles. It’s not easy to adapt to the new normal, but life goes on and we all need to adapt and make the best out of the situation. In braving the Covid-19 Crisis, the way of education in Malaysia has undergone drastic changes and classrooms has mostly been digitalised and been taken online.

In line with Malaysian government’s efforts to encourage reading and literacy among young children in Malaysia, especially the special needs and the underprivileged ones, AFO Radio recently partnered with Traqkid, Kiwanis Malaysia and VGI Transit to encourage reading among children with the #SaveWithStoriesMY campaign.

Inspired by celebrities in the United States who launched an Instagram account that features celebrities and other notable figures reading children’s books under a fundraising project called Save With Stories,  the Malaysian version of Save With Stories program will be told  in three languages namely Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese and English. Each story aims to raise the awareness of reading among young children by selecting interesting children’s stories that will inspire the interest of viewers or listeners to listen and develop a culture of reading.

The highlight of this storytelling project is that each stories is read by an individual who may be a celebrity, a radio announcer or a popular individual on their choice of social media platforms.

William Lim, Chief Executive Officer of AFO Radio explained, “This MCO we saw many people getting involved in helping the underprivileged and we wanted to do our part. When we stumbled across Save With Stories online, we thought it is a wonderful campaign that we can adopt here in Malaysia.”

“We wanted to work with partners that can further enhance this initiative and were fortunate to find Traqkid, who provides solutions surrounding kids’ health, safety and environment, Kiwanis Malaysia that has a history of over 45 years in the promotion for the  betterment of children and VGI Transit who will support awareness of this campaign through its advertising platforms.”

“Each of us will use our capabilities to help raise the awareness of the importance of reading in education and at the same time appeal to donors to fund our campaign to help the less fortunate children.  And what better way to do this than with our very own celebrities to help read to the children and their parents.  We hope this campaign will help inculcate a reading habit with children especially now that we are all confined at home,” added William.

“Traqkid wanted to make a difference in everything we do for our children. Education is the foundation of knowledge and with everything going digital, listening online is the new trend to go. Having a platform such as AFO Radio to help broadcast this campaign on air and online will truly reach out to many people,” says Simon Chin, CEO of Traqkid and also the President Elect of Kiwanis Club of Damansara Uptown.

Kiwanis has been in Malaysia over 45 years. Currently we have 20 permanent projects representing centres for children with special needs established and managed by various Kiwanis clubs all over Malaysia.  These centres run intervention program, job training and other skills development.  Beneficiaries of these centres are mainly children with Down Syndrome, Dyslexia, Autism, ADHD, slow learners and other physical or mental conditions.  With SaveWithStoriesMY, our aim is to raise RM100,000. The money will be used to continue our efforts in providing the under privileged education and also to feed those in need.

“We had embarked on digitalization project to support the Kiwanis clubs and community since 18 months ago.  It is timely that phase 1 of the project was recently completed with the revamped website & payment portal with 2C2P.   A few of clubs have been able to take advantage of this project to raise more than RM40,000 online for families affected by the Covid 19 pandemic,” said Dr Laurence Lim, Governor of Kiwanis Malaysia District added.

The #SaveWithStoriesMY campaign kickstarted a week ago has already garnered an impressive pool of celebrities in the likes of Deborah Henry -Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 & Miss Malaysia World 2007, Carey Ng – Miss Malaysia Universe 2013, Steve Yap – Actor, Wan Wai Fun – previously MYFM announcer & actress and not forgetting Selene and Kym who are both anchor radio announcers at AFO Radio, just to name a few.  Many more postings can be found via Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/savewithstoriesmy) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/savewithstoriesmy).

The objective of #SavewithstoriesMY to inspire everyone to read as well as raise funds to support projects that will help children to gain access to books and education materials, improve their wellbeing and education programs that will nurture their overall development. The campaign will continue throughout Covid-19 Crisis and beyond.

Domino’s Pizza is Blasting With All New Delicious Durian Lava Cake

So, it’s been what? More than 40 days since the government enforced the lockown in effort to battle the Covid-19. And I’ll be completely honest with you, while everyone’s else is picking up on culinary skills and showing off the fruit of their labour on social media while they’re staying home during the quarantine period, I’m still sadly lacking in that department. It’s not that I did not make any efforts but I simply couldn’t pick up the skill, especially baking. Sure, making simple meals is fine, but anything else beyond the frying pan or the microwave is off limits to me, and I’m better off ordering food online. One of my favourite platform to order food is the FoodPanda.

FoodPanda is an online delivery apps that allows users to order food from restaurants that’s nearby their location. It’s an awesome apps and have been somewhat my lifesaver throughout the quarantine period. They have alot of riders who are on standby to deliver your orders and you’re basically spoiled for choices. FoodPanda have plenty of restaurants listed in their apps. Want to eat Korean food? They got it. Craving for desserts or cakes? They got it too. Everything is within clicks away and you can also schedule your order in advance instead of having your food delivered straight away. A perfect plan for those who are busy working from home and sometimes forgets the track of time to take care of their meals. Price-wise, FoodPanda is always offering discounts and free deliveries, so it’s quite kind on the pocket too.

Anyway, I was craving for some pastries and something rich and sweet, and so I searched for something to order on FoodPanda and discovered that Domino’s Pizza has just introduced their new Durian Lava Cake.

This newly released sweet dessert is a marriage between the classic lava cake and the king of fruits, durian. Made from luscious and decadent D24 durian flesh, it’s a guarantee to satisfy any durian lover’s cravings. In the time where social distancing is the new norm, one can no longer hunt for durians on the street, and this is probably the next best thing to a freshly opened durian on the sidewalk.

Having second thoughts about trying this exotic desserts? Well, Domino’s Pizza promises that their Durian Lava Cake is specially crafted in a special way to mask the smell of durian without compromising on the flavors. The hint of durian flavor offers a unique taste, while the exquisite center filling gives it a distinctive and unforgettable experience, so I think it’s worth a shot.

The Durian Lava Cake is available from April 6 onwards. But in line with the Movement Control Order (MCO) period, Domino’s operating hours may differ as per permitted operating hours according to local councils in each state. Its commitment to the safety of its delivery riders and customers is evident with the implementation of its mandatory Zero Contact services, so don’t worry guys, just order away from FoodPanda and give yourself a decadent sweet treat.

BBQ Lamb Kemensah Delivery

So, due to the Covid19, my country has somewhat being forced into a lockdown and I’ve been obediently staying at home for a month. I’m not feeling really okay. I’m an outdoor person and this feels like being in a home arrest more than anything else. To date, I haven’t even stepped my feet beyond my house’s gate and I’ve been hoping that things will get back to normal soon.

I’m thought of the good old times and I realized that I’ve been missing the food at BBQ Lamb Kemensah so badly, and so when I heard they are offering deliver service throughout the quarantine period, I knew I had to have it, since my home is 10km within their delivery coverage.

Here’s what I got for lunch the other day; Smokey Chicken Rice and Smokey Duck Rice

Smokey Duck Rice (RM17), deliciously smoked duck slices served with a side of fragrant herb rice and a garden of pickled vegetable salad, sauces and soup. I don’t usually like ducks because they are gamey, but these are to die for. There duck slices have gamey smell whatsoever and I certainly wouldn’t mind a second helping of this anytime.

Smokey Chicken Rice (RM15). A generous amount of smoked chicken served with a side of fragrant herb rice and a garden of pickled vegetable salad, sauces and soup for you to wash down your meal with.

If there’s anything that I like about the whole set meals is that they have thoughfully put together a garden of pickled veggies on the side for you to go with your rice with. I like how the pickled veggies complement and enhanced the savouriness of both the herb rice and meat.

Now, although the food is of first class in quality, it is srill not the same as dining in the river like it’s supposed to meant to be. If you’ve ever visited BBQ Lamb Kemensah prior to MCO, you’ll understand what I mean.

Check out my old posts here:

I’m definitely gonna revisit and dine in the river again once MCO is lifted. But for now, I’m just gonna stay home, and let the food come to me.

Here’s sharing with you the delivery menu, in case you’d like to order some yummylicious food from BBQ Lamb Kemensah too:

Share The Sweetness of Ramadan with JACK ‘N JILL NIPS Kurma

Jack ‘n Jill NIPS introduces its fabulous NIPS Kurma as an exclusive edition for Hari Raya Jack ‘n Jill NIPS celebrates the spirit of togetherness with a special edition flavour that is
perfect for sharing this Raya. The new Jack ‘n Jill NIPS Kurma is set to brighten up the celebration this year with delicious kurma-flavour chocolate wrapped in a colourful, candy-coated shell. Expect a burst of sweet caramel-y date flavours complemented by rich velvety
milk chocolate when you crunch into a handful of these kaleidoscope of colours. It’s sure to make your Raya that more sensational.

The intense flavours of dates bring out the rich milky chocolate in the playful lentils and teases the palate. The combination is a party in one’s mouth – a delicately crunchy outer layer bellying a decadent chocolate accented with a sweet fruity essence. With this kurma version, Jack ‘n Jill NIPS now has five variants with four existing favourites: Peanut, Raisins, Peanuts and Raisins and Cookies & Crème.

To launch this new Jack ‘n Jill NIPS edition, a campaign dubbed We’re All In Eid Together #EidWithNIPS has been crafted.

“It is impossible to turn a closed eye to the global pandemic that has hit our world this year. We hope NIPS Kurma can bring some kind of lightness and colour in these trying times for all. We want our customers to continue celebrating the good
times intimately with close family as we join efforts with the rest of the world to fight this pandemic,” says Emmanuel B. Puno, Senior Vice President (SVP) of URC Snack Foods
Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

“With NIPS Kurma, we want to bring vibrancy and laughter back into the tapestry of our society, especially during Hari Raya. We need to keep some kind of connectedness – whether through a phone call or a shared activity in each other’s own vicinity – in this time of social distancing. We hope NIPS Kurma and its campaign can remind people of all the sweet moments that keep the bond with each other going,” highlights Puno.

During Hari Raya and even Ramadhan, Puno adds that chocolate is great for sharing with family and friends. NIPS Kurma, especially, is an ideal sweet ending to a sumptuous meal during the festivity as well as during Ramadhan when Muslims Buka Puasa. It’s just a great treat to share with everyone and can be fun to pass around the table too.

“We are very excited that we have put together this new addition to the family of NIPS and able to hit the spot with all Malaysian Muslims who are celebrating the festivity. We wanted
flavours to pop and also wanted to have an added flavour in the chocolate that has a close connection to Hari Raya. I think we managed to find the essence of the right fruit for the celebration to go with our chocolate to keep our customers fully satisfied.”

The new flavour is already available in retail stores – for more details, please visit Jack ‘n Jill NIPS Facebook page. During this festive season, share the essence of Hari Raya with the new Jack ‘n Jill NIPS Kurma.

Brighten up your hearts with the colour and playfulness that each lentil brings. Enjoy the burst of flavours from Jack ‘n Jill NIPS Kurma, enjoy every quality moment spent with loved ones and stay safe doing so!
