Things You Should Know Before Traveling to Malaysia

Credit: @Ellie Toh

Malaysia is generally a tourist friendly country with people who will go extra miles to accomodate visitors. But first time visitors might feel slightly overwhelmed on the first visir. Here’s a brief guide on things you should know before visiting Malaysia:

1. Malaysia is a tropical country and the weather can be quite overwhelming for some. Please make sure that you pack up with you light clothing, comfortable shoes, insect repellent and plenty of sunscreens. Do keep keep yourselves hydrated at all times as there are times that the weather in Malaysia can be scorching hot.

2. Malaysia’s national religion is Islam and therefore prominiscous activities and public displays of affection is generally frowned upon. No kissing in public, especially in the more conservative states in Malaysia like Kelantan, Kedag and Terengganu unless you would like to be fined by the authories.

3. Driving in Malaysia is not that straught forward. To drive in Malaysia, you’ll need an International Drivers Permit but it is recommended that you take taxis to move about as it is easier. Alternatively, you may use ride sharing apps like Uber to move about. Ride sharing service like Uber and Grabcar are available in most states in Malaysia. Should you decide to ride a taxi, please insist on using the meter.

4. You must have a certificate of inoculation for yellow-fever if you’re coming from affected countries. Vaccinations for cholera and small pox are not necessary.

5. Before buying a branded item at an individual shop, be careful of its authenticity as bootleg products are widely available.

6 . Tipping is not practiced or expected at eateries. It’s your prerogative if you do want to tip.

7. Keep your belongings safely with you while you’re out sightseeing.

8. Avoid dodgy alleys, grimy bars and suspicious lanes and be wary of approaching locals selling services that are suspiciously not from legitimate providers.

9. Book your acommodation prior to arrival for best deals. There are plenty of sites online that’s offering great deals for for hotels and guesthouses in Malaysia. Take advantage of these deals for great savings.

10. It is important to note that two of Malaysia’s major airport; KLIA 1 and KLIA 2 are two different places. Not to be confused with KLIA 1 which is catered for international flights, KLIA 2 is mainly used for domestic flights. Should you want to travel domestically within Malaysia, the right place you should go to is KLIA 2. Although KLIA 1 caters to internatinal flight and KLIA 2 is for domestic use and budget carrier flights. KLIA 2 is much more vast in size and can be quite confusing to move around in there. Should you need an assistance and tips in moving around in KLIA 2, you may visit this site HERE. The site contains everything you need to know about KLIA 2. The website is not in any way affliated with any Malaysian Airports Associated but it was built by volunteers to help visitors in finding information on the largest budget carrier airport in Malaysia. You may find infos on flights, accomodation, tips and whatnot here. So if you are a first timer in KLIA2, this site is your best bet.

Malaysia is generally a pleasant country and most Malaysians speaks English well, so there’s no need to feel intimidated during your visit in Malaysia. Wear a smile at all times when you approach the locals and you’d find your favours being returned in no time. Apart from the friendly locals, Malaysia is also a food heaven. Do take advantage of your stay by sampling the wide varieties of food the country have to offer.

Ready to visit Malaysia? Well then, I bid you Selamat Datang and enjoy your stay in Malaysia.

Sheila Amzah to Mesmerize Audience in Resorts World Genting

Pic credit: @Ellie Toh

Malaysian singer-songwriter Shila Amzah, popularly dubbed “Asia’s Sweetheart,” will soon light up the stage at Resorts World Genting with her unique brand of music that has won her international fame across Asia.

Shila Amzah “My Journey” Concert in Malaysia 2017, to be held at the Arena of Stars on 26 August 2017, 8.30pm, will showcase her versatility and will include hits that have won her critical acclaim even in highly competitive markets like Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The concert’s main concept is “My Journey”, which happens to be the title of her latest album. It is a fitting concept that highlights the milestones she has chalked up thus far in the world of music, from the time she first began to sing professionally till now when her rising popularity will see her staging her second concert in Malaysia.

Among the accolades that have confirmed Shila’s success in the international Mandopop market are Best Female Singer at the 15th Global Chinese Music Awards, Female Artist of the Year (Hong Kong and Taiwan) at the 2015 Guangzhou Music Awards, and Best Female Singer (Hong Kong and Taiwan) at the 2016 Music Pioneer Awards. Her achievements also include being nominated World’s Best Female Artiste at the World Music Award.

Little wonder Shila was made Malaysia’s Tourism Ambassador last year, her contributions towards promoting the country through music deservedly earning official recognition. She was also honoured at the 20th Malaysian Music Awards, receiving the Kembara Award (International Music Breakthrough Award), an award given to Malaysian artists that have performed internationally and have helped promote Malaysian songs to the world. Shila became the youngest honoree of the award—she is only 26 years old—after having become the champion of Asian Wave (2012), a reality Chinese singing competition held in Shanghai.

Standing out with her colourful hijab and her emotive ballads, Shila can claim to be not just a singer-songwriter, but also a record producer, actress and businesswoman all rolled into one. The young singer gained recognition very early in her career—her first real success began with her single, Patah Seribu,  receiving Pop Song of the Year at the 19th Malaysian Music Awards. The single is from her second pop studio album, Sha-Hila.

After that in 2015, Shila, whose real name is NurShahila binti Amir Amzah, brilliantly charted her journey into the Chinese music market—stamping her mark in the Mandopop industry in Hong Kong by releasing some new singles. Her latest album, My Journey, released last year, confirms her continued popularity. Shila also successfully established her second record label and a global management company called Shilala (HK) Limited. Not surprisingly, along with being dubbed “Asia’s Sweetheart,” other honorific titles came her way, including “Princess of Music” and “National Treasure of Malaysia.”

Tickets to Shila Amzah “My Journey” Live in Malaysia 2017 are priced at RM318 (VIP), RM248 (PS1), RM188 (PS2), RM138 (PS3) and RM108 (PS4). Genting Rewards Card (GRC) members are entitled to a 10% discount when they purchase tickets by cash or credit card, and Genting Points redemption. This is applicable for all price scales. Admission is one ticket per person applicable to adults, children of all ages and infants.

A Peruvian Gastronomic Experience at Brasaria, Jaya One Petaling Jaya

It was a Sunday and I was feeling quite overwhelmed after a long day at work. Yes. You are reading that right. As a freelancer, I don’t get weekend off. Holidays are usually my working day and last Sunday was no difference. Food is usually a balm to my tired soul and therefore, I’m constantly on the lookout to indulge in good food. Food always makes me feel better and happier, even when I had a bad day. It is like eating all my unhappiness away.

 photo Brasaria-Jaya-One-Petaling-Jaya-2_zps0pt37njz.jpg

I wanted something different and having heard from my friend Hanny Abdullah about this Peruvian chicken joint, Brasaria, I thought I’d give it a go. From the sunny coasts of Lima, across the Andes to the Amazon, Peru’s diverse landscapes are rivaled only by its culinary culture. Considered as one of South America’s gastronomic touchstones, food cultures from the world over have melded with local cuisine to form unique hybrids that are authentically Peruvian.

 photo received_1434805036578086_zpstb4ejhki_edit_1497397074150_zpsfiuurgxr.jpeg

Here’s some of the items that my family and I tried from the menu:

 photo IMG_9446_zpst3eskdjw.jpg

Pollo a la Brasa, a delicious pit roasted chicken that has come to be synonymous with Peruvian food worldwide. This chicken dish are marinated overnight in a blend of spices and then turned gently over a live fire. You are supposed to squeeze a dash of lime juice over the crackled skin but to me, it is as flavourful as it is. Served with the signature Brasaria Aji sauce, I assure you that you will be hooked and would want a repeated experience. Available in three different sizes: El Nino, El Gordo and El Jefe, diners can choose between quarter, half or a whole chicken. You may customise your spice level too – for a milder kick, opt for their Aji Mild flavour, but if you’re in the mood for a more fiery taste, I definitely recommend the Aji Hot.

 photo IMG_9389_zpspkmej8dy.jpg

Brasaria Rice. This is actually Peruvian yellow rice with raisins. Tastewise? Well, I’m not a big fan of raisins in my rice, so this doesn’t exactly suit my palate. But my husband and son are fine with this dish. They seems to like it but I gave this a pass after a spoonful in favour of the Pesto Spaghetti.

 photo IMG_9392_zpspihx30lb.jpg

Pesto Spaghetti is one of the new item on the menu over here in Brasaria. The taste is all right. Not overwhelming with herbal or greeny taste and seems to be everyone’s favourite that night. Well, at least it’s mine. I practically slurped everything off the plate.

 photo IMG_9427_zpsjs69tww0.jpg

El Sánguche is a sandwich dish where pulled roasted chicken is wrapped in a Ciabatta bun and served with a side of cassava chips. Highly recommended for those who wants a quickie, fuss free meal. Simply delicious and I wish I had two of these instead of one.

 photo IMG_9413_zpslqkt81cz.jpg

Elote, or corn on the cob is a popular street food in Mexico, although it is frequently served at home prepared in the same way. It is customarily consumed on a stick, or by grasping the husk of the cob that has been pulled down to form a “handle” but here in Brasaria it is served differently and is slathered with Aji Mild sauce, chilli powder and a healthy amouny of grease. This simple dish is very flavourful and highly addictive. I definitely approve this on my dining table.

 photo IMG_9432_zpswwvvvf6g.jpg

Latin Trio a a triple dose of fiber. This dish offers roasted sweet potatoes, plantain and pineapples for you to munch on. Pretty satisfying dish even on its own.

 photo IMG_9453_zpsiwmgzmws.jpg

Salchipapas. If you are looking for something light to munch on, simply orfer Salchipapas. This is simply deep fried french fries with slices of chicken frankfurters served with a dipping sauce of your choice.

 photo IMG_9402_zpscof8j8l1.jpg

El Pollo Pie was to die for. This is a pie dish featuring roasted chicken filling bedded in a buttery, flaky pie crust topped with Aji sauce. Served with a side of salad, this is easily one of those unforgettable comfort dish that you can order at Brasaria.

 photo 20170611_204156_zpsue3idhhe.jpg

Tres Leches Cake, literally translated to English as the Three Milk Cake is a light, airy sponge cake soaked with a mixture of three kinds of milks: evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and heavy cream. I don’t have sweet tooth and therefore I did not fancy this as much as other dishes at Brasaria. My son however, polished the cake off and asked for my portion. I guess this is good as long as you like sweet food.

Overall the dining experience over here is pleasant. Good food with affordable price, great companion, what more can I ask for? The only thing that is missing is probably just a Piñata fiesta. I’d really love to smack a papier màché and get some candies from it over here.

Note to Over A Cuppa Tea Readers: Show this blog post while dining at Brasaria and say the password “POLLO ALA BRASA” and you will be entitled to a 15% discount off from your bills. However, this cannot be used with other promotions or discounts.

Affordable LEGO Found at Carousell

Have you heard about Carousell? Yes? No? I have no idea what Carousell is all about until a friend of mine, who is an avid Carousell user told me about it.

 photo Screenshot_2017-06-14-14-10-16_zpsfryq7syf.png

Carousell is is an online community platform for selling and buying your used goods. Buying items through Carousell online platform is very easy. Access to available items for sale is made through smartphones or laptops / desktops.

 photo Screenshot_2017-06-14-19-31-07_zps2uwygbba.png

Using Carousell is pretty easy. All you need to do is register an account. You may do so via email or your FB account.

 photo Screenshot_2017-06-14-19-30-21_zps3xo9ai95.png

Then, browse for your choice of items. There are wide varieties of pre-loved items being sold at Carousel, ranging from clothings to household apparels, but what caught my interest the most are the children’s toys that are sold over there. The stuff are mostly pre-loved items but they are mostly still in a very good condition. Simply click ‘BUY NOW’ to make a purchase. Easy as 1, 2, 3 I must say. But of course, do ensure that you have a good internet connection, otherwise your purchase will not be processed successfully.

 photo Screenshot_2017-06-14-19-30-40_zpsveybidh0.png

One of the soft toy that caught my attention, a pink Alcapa

 photo Screenshot_2017-06-14-21-33-05_zps4c2fhrzc.png

Reasonably priced toys. I was looking for a LEGO set for my son the other day and guess what? I saw plenty on sale too over here.

 photo Screenshot_2017-06-14-21-34-22_zps05vftwil.png

Check this out, people. Assorted LEGO set for just RM25. That’s a steal, I must say. Usually they cost much more than this. I’m definitely getting this for my son.

 photo Screenshot_2017-06-14-21-03-02_zpsls95selx.png

Anyway, if you are parents to newborns and babies, they also have baby toys on sale.

 photo Screenshot_2017-06-14-21-03-19_zpsvs7plip7.png

One of the baby toys that I spotted.

 photo Screenshot_2017-06-14-21-03-49_zpsnl9xg7vx.png

And here’s another one that I thought not too bad for parents with newborns.

I must say that I’m impressed with what the Carousell community members have to offer on the site. Not only the goods are still in tip-top condition but goods are sold at a very affordable price too.

Let’s just face it, sometimes buying pre-loved items have its advantage, especially for parents whose babies and children are growing up rapidly. There is no sense buying expensive toys only to discover that the kids will either outgrown them or lose interest in them in about a week time and the toys will be left unwanted in the corner of the room.

When it comes to buying babies children’s toys, I personally think buying from Carousell is a smarter move. I highly recommend Carousell for your online shopping needs, especially for parents who constantly need to cater to their children’s entertainment needs.

Excitements Overload at Vision City Video Games Park, Resorts World Genting

As per my family tradition, we usually go on an eco escapade during school holidays but this time around, the school holiday coincides with Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month and since we are observing Ramadan as well, going outdoors and opting for activities that requires extreme physical exertion is definitely out of the question as we are fasting.

 photo BeautyPlus_20170610185833_fast_zpsvshi6nuw.jpg

And so, instead of exploring some jungle again, my family and opt for some fun at Vision City Video Games Park at Resorts World Genting during the last weekend of Malaysian midterm school holiday.

 photo IMG_8509_zpsdb52g03m.jpg

Located nearby Genting Grand Hotel, Vision City Video Games Park offers 24 hours of unlimited arcade fun. Never mind what people say about arcade parlours having seen better days: but arcade gaming is definitely here to stay, especially in the context of a holiday resort. Whether one is holidaying alone, with family or friends, or with work colleagues, arcade video games do offer much entertainment value, promising hours of fun and instilling a sense of togetherness
among people. Vision City Video Games Park is where leisure seekers of all ages can enjoy the countless machines that provide an array of pleasurable challenges.

 photo 20170610_183852_zps6lt18btw_edit_1497370214016_zpsmtt9vzzo.jpg

This is one of the largest arcade centres in the country, with a total of 429 units of machinery are available, offering four different types of games, namely video games, redemption games, kiddie rides and skill games. The total number of video games available is 294, including the latest state-of-the-art video machines from Japan, Taiwan and China.

 photo 20170610_154652_zpsm2kzdsnh.jpg

Unlike the traditional arcade that I grew up with, no coin tokens are required for the machines over here at Vision City Video Games Park but we are required to use eZiCash instead.

 photo 20170610_161902_zpslezc20mb.jpg

These eZiCash are the currency for Vision City Video Games and enables you to play at the arcade machines and the carnival-like games. All you need is this eZiCash card with preloaded credits in it. We got two of the cards and armed with RM200 credits loaded in each eZiCash cards respectively.

 photo 20170610_161759_zpshrunifl1.jpg

Checking and topping-up for remaining credits can be done at designated machines for it. All you need to do is just swipe the card at the machine and you will be shown your eZiCash value.

 photo 20170610_171635_zpsw5uxxfur.jpg

The arcade gaming machines are pretty much hot stuff over here and you can see people going for them all the time for their dose of fun and here’s my husband and son trying one of them. This machine features a skill game where you will need team up with another player and shoot your enemy with it while strategizing and escape route.

 photo 20170610_180909_zpsloytm54x.jpg

My husband giving a competitive racing game a go.

 photo 20170610_183723_zps1gejdtcd.jpg

My husband trying one of the all time favourite classic arcade game, the pinball game.

 photo IMG_8586_zpscwbhjsrm.jpg

Getting my hands on a Transformer game. This is also another one of those skill machine where I need to do both maneuveuring and shooting. Pretty challenging and I was killed off in game pretty much early.

 photo IMG_8853_zpss66hdaw6.jpg

Me, trying my hands at a music box game. I fared better here than the earlier Transformers gaming machine.

 photo IMG_8827_zpsqpktmi1a.jpg

Playing the drumming game was really satisfying. I actually won this game and made it to final round.

 photo BeautyPlus_20170610182506_fast_zpsk3yxf7yz.jpg

I’m hopeless at arcade and carnival games but this time around, I was really hoping that I could can bring some plushies. Let’s just say that this is one of my unfulfilled childhood whims; being able to loot loads of plushies back from the arcade. And so, after rounds and rounds playing at those arcade machines, I practically dragged my husband and son to play those carnival games instead. Here is where you can redeem prizes instantly should you win the games that you chose to play.

 photo IMG_8913_zpspsh0a8iw.jpg

Catch the Rubber Duckies game. This game relies on nothing but sheer luck. If you managed to fish a duck with a label on it’s underside, then you will win a plushie to bring home.

 photo IMG_8912_zpsllvwfew1.jpg

I gave up on this after my fourth try. Needless to say, I won nothing from the Rubber Duckies Game.

 photo IMG_8743_zpsuphlsdd3.jpg

Knowing that it will be a futile attempt for me to win anything from the games over here, I bullied my son to help me win something instead on the next game; the ring tossing game.

 photo 20170610_163414_zpsgcccw4vj.jpg

And when the boy failed in the game, I got my husband to help me out at the claw machine game. I kinda like the plushies in the machine but I failed in getting any plushies from there after so mamy attempts. Like the Catch the Rubber Duckie game, this is quite tricky to play too. Clawing the plushies takes alot of hand-eye-coordination skill.

But winning plushies from Vision City Video Games Park is not impossible. All it takes is alot of skills and focus, and of course, patience and perserverence. My husband and son managed to win a pair of Couple Ants for me before we left.

We may not win back a dozen plushies from the games, but it was a really fun for us as a family, and I wouldn’t mind a repeated experience.
