Kembara #dekatje: River Tubing at Kalumpang Resorts and Training Centre

I have a confession to make. I’m an adrenaline junkie. I love doing exhilarating things that makes my heart beat wildly and I would always jump at the opportunity of doing extreme sports. I discovered with pleasure that Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre is a place that offers such things.

One of the exhilarating, adrenaline pumping thing that we did during our stay at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre was river tubing. Tubing is a recreational activity where an individual rides on top of an inner tube, either on water, snow, or through the air. One could easily mistake that it’s a relaxing thing, but it’s definitely not. It was far from a cruise along the river. It was actually a bumpy ride. I don’t really have much pictures of our tubing activity as it was really a rough ride and I could barely hold the camera throughout the bumps but managed to capture some of the moments with my waterproof, shockproof Nikon Coolpix S33. Here’s sharing the moments with you. Yes. My son tagged along too, and I’m so proud of him.

First, we were given a tube, a helmet and a lifejackets to wear. And then, our instructor guided us upstream where the river flows from top to bottom.

Helmets and lifejackets is absolutely necessary to avoid any unwanted injuries and incidents as the river flows really fast and it was really deep too. There are chances of you being thrown off from the tube, even when you hold onto it tightly.

This is not the first time he went tubing and yet he still get thrown off from his tube.

It may look easy, but it’s pretty tough.

But all is good. There are rope lines for you to cling to if the ride is too fast for you.

If you are wondering whether it is safe or not, don’t worry. There are marshalls stationed at each points, and they keep a really good eye on you. You’re definitely in good hands.

If my son who is just 10 years old can do it, you got no excuse not to do it. It’s all about attitude and taking challenges with a pinch of salt.

We managed to go for two rounds of river tubing but it was getting dark, so instead of going for the third, we called it a day and just frolick in the river instead.

We did it in Eco Murai Rimba at Batang Kali, and we did it again at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre. It’s our trademark. A must do thing when we ventured to any rivers in Malaysia.

Kembara #dekatje: Kampung Style Lunch at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre

It was a busy and tiring morning after our coverage for Kalumpang Rainforest Jungle Run. Everyone was famished and upon arrival and checking in to Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre, our host graciously ushered for lunch.

Lunch was traditional Malay style where all the dishes were spread out on the floor and we eat our meal communal style with our hands.

The lunch spread was truly amazing and it’s nothing like what you can get in resraurants.

Assorted freshly plucked ulam-ulaman, salted eggs, salted fish, fried tofu and fried tempeh served in a huge tray. These side dishes are paired with steamed white rice and is absolutely delicious.

A must in every traditional Malay dish, sambal belacan.

Grilled fish wrapped with banana leaf and stuffed with sambal belacan. I usually detest fish, but this dish is to die for and please don’t ask how many helping I had. The amount was not very ladylike. 😛 They served my favourite tumeric fried chicken too but I attacked this with fervour instead.

And last but not least, this delicious Papaya soup. It’s the chef’s specialty and was naturally sweet. This soup is said to have healing properties and it is believed that the soup helps in combating sore throat and reducing excessive body heat.

We washed off our lunch with young coconut juice before heading to the next thing on our itinerary; swimming in the river and tubing.

Kembara #dekatje: Riverside Chalet at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre

As I mentioned in my previous post where I summarized my family’s retreat at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre with our friends from Tourism Malaysia Selangor, the place is an agro tourism resort that was built in the orchards on land covering 17 acres and is a haven for those who would love to get close to nature.

Walking towards the entrance, guests will be greeted by the resident parrot, who amazingly doubled as a ‘receptionist’ for the souvenir shop.

And a cheeky monkey who’d do anything for you to get you to release him from the cage during his non play time.

There is a river located deep inside the resort, and one does not necessarily have to be a guest of the resort to enjoy the river activities or a relaxing riverside picnic. The place is accessible to public and daily pass can be obtained at the reception house outside for RM10 per adult and RM5 per child.

Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre has more than 70 units of chalets built with both natural and modern elements. Apart from that, there are hostels for visitors who came in groups. For those who are more adventurous. campsites with tents are available for rent. Sleeping bags is however not included.

Out chalet was located deep inside of the Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre.

It was about 8 minutes walk away from the entrance of the resort.

By luck or chance, the room allocated to my family happens to be just by the riverside, so we have quite a great view from our room.

The chalet is meant for couple and is equipped with a sofa and TV at the livingroom and a Queen size bed at the bedroom.

Queen size bed. The bedroom is equipped with air conditioner, which we did not use at all throughout the duration of our stay as the air was already cold and refreshing and is almost freezing at night.

There is bathroom ensuite for your convenience, but as the place’s concept is kinda back to nature, there is no hot water shower installed. Water sources is from the mountain, so it is really refreshing.

While it’s quite embarrassing to admit, but I have to say that although my husband and I have a habit of sharing the shower together whenever we are on trips and we are usually much more interested in the bathroom much more than our bedroom, my husband and I only used the shower twice, as we spent most of our time bathing in the nature; in the river itself with our friends from Tourism Malaysia Selangor. I’m not sure if anyone would approve of that, behaving like some juvenile teenager on the loose and launching water splashing wars, but hey, the water activities here in Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre is a big thing, and the water temperature in the river isn’t terribly cold, and therefore we found the great river is much more fun than our bathroom. 😉

Kembara #dekatje: Kalumpang Resorts and Training Centre

Kalumpang, not to be confused with the district in Indonesia and a place in East Malaysia, Kalumpang that my family and I visited last month is a small town in the state of Selangor, Malaysia. It is located in the northern part of the state next to Hulu Bernam which is another small town in the district of Hulu Selangor that serves as a border town of Selangor and Perak.

Secluded, quiet and still quite untouched by the fast paced development and away from the bustling city, one would have never guessed that the town have is much more than just an eerily quiet sleeping town.

Following my family’s adventure with our friends from Tourism Malaysia Selangor for our Kembara #dekatje 2015 project, we ventured deep into Kalumpang to Kalumpang Resorts and Training Centre.

Kalumpang Rainforest Jungle Run 2015

If you are a reader of this blog or my friend on Facebook or Instagram, you would notice that I’ve been exposing AlienGoTravel to the great outdoors. We’ve been up to quite a lot of things and here’s sharing with you one of it.

A couple of weeks back, our friends from Tourism Malaysia Selangor invited me and my boys to witness the Kalumpang Rainforest Jungle Run 2015 with them. Kalumpang Rainforest Jungle Run 2015 is jointly organized by Green Leaf Events and Marketing Services, Kalumpang Resorts and Training Centre, Majlis Daerah Hulu Selangor and sponsored by Sneak Peak Products, Running Malaysia and last but not least, supported by Tourism Malaysia.

Kalumpang Rainforest Jungle Run is a 18km run held annually in Kalumpang and is part of an initiative in conjunction of #DekatJe campaign by Tourism Malaysia to elevate Malaysia as a internationally preferred sports tourism destination.

There is a lot of runs and marathons being organized around in the country. And one would have said that this one is no different than others, but trust me, Kalumpang Rainforest Jungle Run 2015 is the sort of run that will challenge you to get out of your comfort zone, push you to your limits and give you the thrilling satisfaction of being a champion. Unlike regular runs or marathons where the venue is usually the comforting and familiar path in the city or small town, Kalumpang Rainforest Jungle Run 2015 is held in a jungle. Yes. You are reading that right, it’s held in the jungle, where you will have to check-in at multiple different checkpoints before you can head back to the finishing line.

I have never participated in a run or a marathon in my life, and although we were also given the opportunity to participate by the organizer, my family and I opt to just be a spectator as we are well aware of the dire consequences of running without proper training. Although my family and I did not intend to participate in the run, but we’re adrenaline high nevertheless. We arrived at the venue at about 7am with our Visit Malaysia mascot, Bayau. He’s a new addition to our little family, courtesy of Tourism Malaysia, and yes, he’ll be joining us is most of our adventures from now onwards.

runners before flag off. The run is open to not just Malaysians but international runners too and was split to a couple of categories; Men Open, Women Open, Senior and Boys Junior and Girls Junior.

It was a well organized run. Medics and security officers on duty were spotted at almost all corners of the venue, keeping order and vigilant eyes, and ready to serve.

Everyone present were adrenaline high. Even the event crews were all hyped up that morning.

And look at them go, the runners ran as if their life depends on it.

So what did we do after flagging off? Well, my family and I rode ahead on a 4wd to designated checkpoints with the fabulous people from Tourism Malaysia Selangor and other members of the media. It was one hell of an unexpected ride.

We thought the path to each checkpoints was easy but all of us had quite a shock when the engine started revving and the 4wd roughly pave ways through the jungle to reach the checkpoints before the runners. I seriously can’t imagine what the runners had to endure to get to each checkpoints.

Fast forward a couple of hours after chasing the runners in the jungle with our 4wd, we headed to the finishing line, just in time to see then starting to arrive.

Prize giving was done at approximately 1pm before the crowd was dispersed and we were ushered for our crib for the night at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre.

I thought my adventure for the week ended with our 4wd ride, but I was wrong. Little did we know that more exhilirating surprises was practically waiting for us at the resort. Tourism Malaysia Receives 2 Awards at Taipei International Fair 2015

Tourism Malaysia received the Best Performance Group Award and Best Booth Design Award for National Tourism Organisation (NTO) at the 23rd Taipei International Travel Fair 2015 (TITF 2015), which is the largest travel fair in Taiwan. The event was held from 6 to 9 November at the Taipei World Trade Centre (TWTC).

Both awards were presented today to Tourism Malaysia’s Senior Director of International Promotion Division (Asia & Africa) Datuk Musa Haji Yusof by the Chairman of Taipei International Travel Fair Cherng Tyan Su. This is a huge recognition of Tourism Malaysia’s promotional effort during the four-day event.

A total of 17 Malaysian exhibitors showcased their unique tourist attractions, products and services, at the Malaysia Pavilion, which was strategically located near the entrance.

Information brochures in Mandarin were distributed at the booth and attractive games and activities were also conducted. The Malaysia Pavilion garnered a lot of attention through the performances by the SWATARI Dance Academy and Emma Ruran Raja, who played the sape, a Sarawak musical instrument.

This year, a total of 62 countries participated in the Taipei ITF with almost 1,000 booths, attracting over 350,000 consumers. For Taiwanese tourists, Malaysia’s beautiful islands, exciting theme parks and delicious food are still the main attractions. A special travel forum was organised on the same day at TITF, featuring a panel of experts who shared their views on the latest global tourism trend.

Behind The Scene with Hunks, and More Hunks

I’m a terribly vain person. I appreciate beautiful things in life. This may sound superficial but I like to dress up and feeling good about myself. I like dresses that flatters me and make me stands out in the crowd, and therefore, I appreciate designer’s clothing much more than branded clothing that you can easily obtain in retail stores. There is something about designer’s clothing that brings out such an enigma out of you.

Being in the media industry for almost a decade, I’ve been invited to countless fashion shows, and I enjoyed each and every one of it immensely, especially the presentation of each designer’s masterpiece. In my opinion, all of them are wonderfully unique in their own ways.

Whenever I get invites for fashion shows, I will always be given media seats or VIP seats with unobstructed views. It is an honour and I’ve always been happy with the arrangement but a bigger honour would be the most recent one I’ve been invited to, during MaTic Street Art Festival 2015, where there is a fashion show that features Mr.Planet Malaysia 2016 finalists showcasing street wear collections by four renowned local designers was showcased.

As mentioned earlier, MaTic Street Art Festival 2015 is an effort done by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture to introduce street art culture to the public and at the same time, endorse artists from all walks of life as undeniably remarkable talents that should be appreciate by all, be it locally or internationally. Part of the things that MaTic Street Art Festival 2015 offers to the visitors was street fashion.

I’ve been to plenty of fashion show, mostly are classy and glamorous ones but this time around, instead of media or VIP seat, I was given an exclusive insight on what happened behind the scene, at the dressing room before the fashion show commence. Best part of it all? Everything was so pleasing on the eyes. And yes. I was literally talking about the models.

It is indeed an interesting experience, to be able to get an insight of what went on behind the scene before a fashion show and I come to realize that to make even a 15 minutes fashion showcase successful, it takes a lot of efforts and preparation beforehand.

Here’s what actually happens behind the scene. Models don’t always look photo ready for photographers to shoot when they are strutting their stuff on stage. A make up artist always have a hand in that. Here’s MUA Kahoo of Kahoo image, prepping lecturer cum model, Fareez Vincent Amos before the show.

Stripping in and out of clothing. All of these needs to be swiftly done to ensure time is well managed.

Discipline is well enforced and adhered at all times. Instructions by organizers, coaches and designers are followed closely to ensure perfect chereography on stage. What you see here is models who are lining up and listening to instructions on what they are supposed to do and how they should choreograph themselves on stage in order to captivate the audience.

Sometimes, there can be changes on showtimes due to weathers and whatnot, so the models have to keep their patience in check at all times and not throw temper tantrums.

Entertaining adoring fans who swing by is also part of the package, and I’m pleased to report that these models are not just models, but gentlemen in the truest sense as well.

Sure, things can be a little frenzy in the dressing room, but there is always time for fun before business. Here’s the models having some fun group picture time with each other.

Some eye candies for you ladies, and gentlemen too if you swing that way. These men are not only looks but with brains too. Not all of them are full time models. Most of them have day job and are professionals.There’s an editor, doctor, lecturer and university student over here in the picture. Can you make a guess which one is which?

And here’s one for the album. In my humble opinion, while Malaysians tend to look West whenever fashion brands is concerned, both our local models and designers are like diamonds in the rough. They are talented and have a lot to offer to the fashion and tourism industry at an international level. All we need to is just give them some recognition that they deserve and you’ll discover that you have actually been missing a lot.

MaTiC Street Art Festival 2015, Fun Filled Weekend For The Whole Family

I’m living in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, and there is plenty of happening events going on during the weekends. You may or not realized it, but the bustling city got more to offer than just the iconic twin towers.

MOTAC, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture has made a lot of effort to promote domestic travel, and one of it was the MaTic Street Art Festival 2015.

MaTic Street Art Festival 2015 was a two day street art festival, held on 6th and 7th November 2015 at MaTic Jalan Ampang, celebrating all thing artsy, including street sports and fashion show.

Street art in the form of mural is seen in the vicinity of the festival ground. One thing interesting about this mural wall is that visitors could not only take a picture with the mural as a backdrop, but could also contribute to it by drawing whatever they like on the mural wall. Art is definitely subjective. By the time my family and I visited, there was already so many things drawn onto it.

Visitors could try their hands…or legs at landing a goal or two at the street soccer section.

Live music by local busking group can be heard throughout the entire festival.

And where there is street music, there is of course, street dance.

And what’s a Malaysian festival without food? Malaysian is well known for their love for food, and foodtrucks selling all sort of delicious street food could be seen neatly lining up at MaTic Street Art Festival 2015 for all to enjoy.

Unlike most food festival I’ve been to where the price practically cuts your throat, the food price over here at the MaTic Street Art Festival 2015 is pretty much reasonable and competitive.

Apart from food, assorted drinks and desserts were sold at the food truck section too.

Ice cream cones can be enjoyed at as low as RM1. Amazing, don’t you think.

Apart from being a foodie heaven, MaTic Street Art Festival 2015 also celebrates the glory of local fashion industry where 4 local designers collaborated to showcase their collections on stage.

The fashion show did not start until 9.30pm, so we walked around and took the opportunity to snap pictures around, and interestingly enough, we discovered a new animation theme park, MAPs will be opening in Ipoh next year, and their mascots were spotted walking around, obliging the adoring fans for a picture or two.

As the night falls, the centre stage started to heat up when the emcee announced that there will be performances and whatnot.

We were then entertained by various local artists. Here’s lovely Ana Rafali, serenading to us.

I always look forward to spend a fun filled weekend with both my husband and son. I don’t know how it is like for everyone else but to me, nothing beats spending quality time with our family after working hard during the weekdays and MaTic Street Art Festival 2015 was definitely worth spending our time at.

Sungei Wang Sci Fi Festival

The First Sungei Wang Plaza Sci-Fi Festival blasts off from 7th November 2015 to 15th November 2015.

The Sci-Fi Festival is initiated to create a platform for Sci-Fi “geeks” and cosplay lovers with same interests to get together and interact with each other in this remarkable event and take advantage of the amazing promotions & discounts offered by the cosplay & toy shops in Sungei Wang Plaza.

Starting with the Intergalactic Showdown on the 7th and 8th November 2015, followed by the Clash of the Superheroes on 14th and 15th November 2015 at Concourse Level, Sungei Wang Plaza, this 4 days jam packed with performances, parade and activities for hard-core Sci-Fi fans to participate in.

Dress up in favourite superhero attire and join in the fun – Star Wars Fan Parade and Superheroes Parade. There will also have Saber performance by Lightsaber Academy and Superheroes Skit Performance.

For shoppers who like to take selfie or wefie, you may head to Sungei Wang Plaza to take pictures with your favourite Superheroes character 3D statue such as Superman, Batman, The Incredible Hulk or any element of the Sci-Fi Festival and stand a chance to win the facebook/instagram contest. The photo with the highest number of Facebook “Likes” will bring home cash vouchers amounting to RM300.00. Shoppers can also design their own lightsaber and superhero identity (superhero mask) in the workshops organised during this Sci-Fi Festival.

The Fans of Sci-Fi may join us during our event day on the 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th November 2015 in your own Sci-Fi costume and stand a chance to grab our Star Wars merchandizes such as 3D deco lights, Superheroes toys, Star Wars Dvds and many more!
